The boss of the company behind the devastated Japanese nuclear reactor today broke down in tears - as his country finally acknowledged the radiation spewing from the over-heating reactors and fuel rods was enough to kill some citizens
'In hindsight, we could have moved a little quicker in assessing the situation and coordinating all that information and provided it faster.'

It’s the cumulative effect that’s dangerous. Stop eating bananas and meats and don’t drink milk plus stay indoors and you will be fine. Oh, and don’t forget to wear you sunscreen when going outside.
I wonder if the company will withdraw application for extending units #5 & #6 lifetimes after being approved for another 10 years.
He is just an anti-nuker trying to scare people. There is not and never has been any danger, and everything is and always has been under control. sarc/
Stop eating meat? Bananas no problem, milk ok, but meat?
Like I said, the problem isn’t the generators. They have replacement generators. What they don’t have is a way to connect them to the cooling system because that was all underground and was completely flooded. There are other problems, too. A valve to one reactor is stuck shut and another is under such high pressure that pumps can’t push the water in. Someone said that it’s like trying to pour water into an inflated balloon.
The west coast of what country? If you mean the US you need sit down, take a deep breath, and calm down. Gees You aren't an iodine pill sales person are you?
LOL. We eat a lot of salmon but are not so knowledgeable about where they go...I know they really travel.
So we were thinking of stocking up on salmon, not face masks, not KI pills, just fish.
There have also been people "lighting up" in very tiny amounts as they come into our airports from Tokyo.
“We will not know the true level of the threat until the radiation particles emitted as a result of the three explosions that devastated Fukushima hits the west coast over the weekend and into Monday.”
Just like Chernobyl. The Swedes plotted the plume back to the area in Ukraine and called the Soviets on it. The Soviets finally admitted it when everyone already knew it. I suspect this thread concerns the realization in Japan that Americans will be finding out shortly just how much radiation was released at which point their episode of denial is over.
It’s too bad they turned down your suggestions. When were they submitted? And why do you think Japan isn’t capable of having gas turbine generators?
You’re injecting profound knowledge and rationality into the discussion. Is this allowed?
They didnt cut corners, the tsunami blew away their backup systems.
They built this power plant too close to the coast and in the path of a potential Tsunami wave. Even if it cost more, it should have been built at least 20 miles inland, to make sure an earthquake and Tsunami didn’t disable the power supply and the backup generators. I know it’s easy to be a Monday morning quarterback, but this is an obvious blunder considering the Tsunami risk in Japan. America doesn’t have that Tsunami risk, so we can build nuke plants right next to the ocean. But this was a bad mistake to build this plant on the east coast of Japan right next to the ocean. I’ll bet that will be one of the conclusions of a commission that reviews this disaster.
Based on everything I’ve heard, there’s no radiation risk to the US because the radioactive material will be so highly dispersed by the time it gets here. But if the wind shifts and starts to move east-to-west, that could send radioactive material into much closer areas in Japan and possibly Korea and China. I don’t know how serious the contamination could be, but that’s the major concern in this disaster along with the health of the people working at the power plant.
Have you seen the graveyard of the military equipment which was used during that time? Every one had people in them. Look it up and tell me that only a few people died during that time. That stuff still has so much radiation that people are not allowed to be near it. The solidest who had to go to Chernobyl died within a very short time of being at the site. Some only lived a few minutes. How about all the people in the area who died of cancer caused by radiation but were reported as just dying from cancer? How about the many many children who developed thyroid cancer who were treated by teams of doctors from this country? You should look up Elena Filatova’s website. She rode her motorcycle through parts of that area. She does not have any good words for the gov’t at that time. Some of the people she has talked to have said it would be radioactive for thousands of years. One was her own father who was a noted physicist in that country at that time. She said he started teaching her about nuclear education as a child.
“You mean that after a Quake and Tsunami that probably already killed more than 20,000 people, a couple more may die of radiation poisoning?
The horror!”
I haven't seen any information on how high above sea level the generators actually were. I also haven't seen any information on how high the tsunami wave was estimated to be when it hit the plant. It would be nice to know for us Monday morning quarterbacks..
Brazil nuts give off even more natural radiation than bananas.
Here's a fearmongering article on it: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/24/garden/24granite.html (h/t Eepsy)
