Sitting silent in their classroom, the 30 children whose parents have not come to collect them after tsunami swept away their town

Even amid the carnage and despair of Japan's tsunami victims, the plight of the 30 children at Kama Elementary School is heartbreaking.

They sit quietly in the corner of a third-floor classroom where they have waited each day since the tsunami swept into the town of Ishinomaki for their parents to collect them. So far, no one has come and few at the school now believe they will.

Teachers think that some of the boys and girls, aged between eight and 12, know their fathers and mothers are among the missing and will never again turn up at the gates of the school on the eastern outskirts of the town, but they are saying nothing.

I can’t imagine those kids sitting there day after day. I wonder how they are eating? Hopefully the school had a few days of chow. I believe some of the parents are just having a tough time getting to the school. Others could be in hospitals and unfortunately in some cases some may be dead. Hopefully they all make it to the school to pick up their children.

One of the saddest stories I have ever heard in my life. Just reading the headlines brings tears.

There was a segment on Fox and Friends this morning of a young woman, who was in the area at the time working at a school. Her parents were told she was fine, then told they didn’t have confirmation of that. They mentioned something about her taking care of children “who were left”. Was this young woman at this school? Does anyone know?

It is heartbreaking.

Why aren’t they being sent here and adopted like the Haitians? Not Clinton pets I guess.

I don’t think Japan just wants to farm out their orphans.

Miracles of god happens. Some may turn up yet. Seriously, injured perhaps, or disoriented still.

Heavenly Father, God of the universe, awesome and almighty, majestic and magnificent, we come before thee asking for mercy for the people of Japan, Mercy and loving kindness and compassion. Nothing is too hard for thee. Nothing. We pray for parents and children and family to find each other and be/are reunited. Bless the children. Heal their land and their people, help the engineers shut down the drastic threats of the nuclear power units. Allow the restoration of stability in their land in strength and healing. in Jesus name, amen.

It’s difficult to even comprehend. Whole villages wiped off the face of the Earth, children orphaned instantly. And we still don’t know much of what the real human toll is, as the nuke reactors have taken up all the air time.

I would assume that the orphaned children will be adopted by relatives in other villages or prefectures, so strong is the Japanese family culture. This story reminds me of the families holding vigils near the WTC after 9/11, hoping a family member or loved one would be found, and it was not meant to be. Just gut wrenching.

That’s what I wonder. Would Japan allow these kids to be adopted?

My first thought was to adopt one, but I think Japan is pretty restrictive that way.

On the flip side, and this just boils my blood, it’s much easier to adopt from a foreign country than it is to adopt a needy American child.
