BATON ROUGE - The Republican Party's nascent majority in the state Senate continued to grow Thursday when a Democratic lawmaker from the Baton Rouge suburbs announced he is switching parties.
Jody Amedee of Gonzalez, a trial lawyer first elected to the upper chamber in 2003, became the third Senate Democrat in the past five months to move into the Republican column.
Amedee's move gives the GOP a 21-18 majority in the Senate and comes after two veteran lawmakers -- John Alario of Westwego and John Smith of Leesville -- switched parties last year. Republicans also picked up two seats in special elections earlier this year.
"We do not believe (Amedee) will be the last," said Sen. Danny Martiny, R-Kenner, who chairs the Republican delegation in the Senate. "This is a continuing sign of the shift in philosophy toward conservative principles across this state."
Even though Republicans hold a majority, Senate President Joel Chaisson II of Destrehan, a Democrat, is expected to keep his leadership job. The chairmanships of the various committees also will continue to be spread among members of both parties.
