The chief of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission said Wednesday that all the water is gone from one of the spent fuel pools at Japan's most troubled nuclear plant, but Japanese officials denied it.
If NRC Chairman Gregory Jaczko is correct, this would mean there's nothing to stop the fuel rods from getting hotter and ultimately melting down. The outer shell of the rods could also ignite with enough force to propel the radioactive fuel inside over a wide area.
Jaczko did not say Wednesday how the information was obtained, but the NRC and U.S. Department of Energy both have experts on site at the Fukushima Dai-ichi complex of six reactors. He said the spent fuel pool of the complex's Unit 4 reactor has lost water.
Jaczko said officials believe radiation levels are extremely high, and that could affect workers' ability to stop temperatures from escalating.
Japan's nuclear safety agency and Tokyo Electric Power Co., which operates the complex, deny water is gone from the pool. Utility spokesman Hajime Motojuku said the "condition is stable" at Unit 4.

Certainly he is qualified as he has worked for Harry Reid, Ed Markey and served all his career in government service. See http://www.aps.org/units/fgsa/careers/non-traditional/jaczko.cfm
Does this resume not sound a familiar pattern in the Obama Zoo in DC?
All this is is advancing an agenda that Zero has had and will bring out the alarmists as often as possible.
All those Robots in Japan and they don’t have one that can drag a hose up there?
Your source for the story is NPR. The Christian hating NPR.
ok, so what Obama’s people are sayig is that even though masses of water helped (tsunami) caused the meltdown, there’s no water in the tank now!
I was wondering about that too.
Gregory Jaczko is an Obama hack. Of course NPR is all over the guy.
Never let a crisis go to waste.
If we haven’t focused one of our satellites that have enough high resolution to read a newspaper from space over this disaster area, then the NSA, CIA and National Security Director are not doing their job.
We OUGHT to know more than the Japanese on this.
Yeah, that’s the ticket. Make it into a left or right wing thing a ding. Of course they’re alarmists! Hardly anyone has taken a dive in those pools since forever. The pool at the Y is just fine.
Embassies moving out of Tokyo. So what! Rents are probably cheaper in Kyoto anyway! And what’s 20 times normal radiation and climbing in Tokyo? Man up a little, you wusses! You get more radiation in the typical radiation therapy for advanced pancreas cancer. Get over it! Pot is legal if you need it for nausea. What’s all the brew ha ha?
Serious with all this confusing informations and storys that seem to change every Hour its impossible to know whats really going on.
So... what is the point of the U.S. NRC chief announcing this, especially in the face of Japanese denials?
The Japanese officials are lying to avoid panic at the market and avoid bank runs. I don’t blame them. The situation is bad enough as it is.
If the roof is still on the Spent Fuel Pool then a satellite will not be able to see a thing.
Obama hates our closest allies. If this had happened to Great Brittan, he would have left for vacation the first day it happened.
NRC chair Gregory Jaczko added that the NRC's information on the situation was "very limited."
If their info is very limited, why make pronouncements like this?
I’m not convinced this fellow is a complete political animal. There’s a website I ran across in the course of my hunting down info this week called “Pro Nuclear Democrat”
http://pronucleardemocrats.blogspot.com/
and on the site there’s a video of a lecture given by Jaczko:
http://pronucleardemocrats.blogspot.com/2010/06/nrc-chairman-gregory-jaczko-lectures-at.html
While Markey is a nasty little man, Jaczko was actually appointed to the NRC by President Bush, so who knows.
I understand THEIR motivation.
I was asking about the NRC Chief's motivation.
"I think the events unfolding in Japan actually appear to me to be more serious than Three Mile Island," Chu said. "To what extent, we don't really know right now. They're unfolding on an hour-by-hour basis and there are conflicting reports."I don't think either of these guys belongs in the "credible knowledgeable source" group just yet.
WEll maybe they will get that new power line installed in time and start pumping water again.
