LAPD eases impound policy for illegal immigrants
KPCC ^ | March 15, 2011 | Frank Stoltze

In a move closely watched by other Southern California law enforcement agencies, LAPD Chief Chalie Beck has ordered his officers end the practice of immediately seizing the cars of undocumented immigrants who are stopped at sobriety checkpoints. The move comes amid concerns that police were unfairly targeting those drivers.

The news came as a relief for Maria Ranjel of Boyle Heights. Her husband and three sons are undocumented immigrants who drive all the time, even though they're ineligible to apply for drivers licenses in California.

“We know well that it’s against the law to drive without a license but it’s just because of need that we do it – to take our kids to and from school, to go to and from the market," Ranjel said through a translator. "It’s just too hard to take the bus.”

Ranjel said police repeatedly have stopped her husband and sons at sobriety checkpoints, and impounded their cars. It’s cost the family thousands of dollars.

She is part of an activist group called L.A. Voice that’s been lobbying police to ease their impound policies. Ranjel was elated LAPD Chief Charlie Beck agreed.

“I wanted to shout with joy at the news. It’s just good news for the Latino community."

Under the LAPD’s new policy, officers will give unlicensed illegal immigrants “reasonable time” to find someone else to drive their car home. It only applies at sobriety checkpoints and only if the driver isn’t drunk or otherwise wanted by police.

Chief Beck said “it’s the right thing to do.”

“The sad truth is that the people that were most impacted by this law were the people that could afford it the least – generally hardworking folks who are trying to make a life for themselves in the city of Los Angeles."

"The law gives me the option whether or not I impound that vehicle for 30 days. I am exercising that option because of the adverse impact of this law.”

The chief said unlicensed U.S. citizens and legal residents stopped at checkpoints will still see their cars impounded, because unlike undocumented immigrants they have the choice to get a license.

Amid an increasingly anti-immigrant political environment in the U.S., Mexican Consul General Juan Carlos Mendoza praised the new policy Who said crime does not pay

Anybody caught without a driver’s license while driving should have their car towed, regardless of race or immigration status. Why would illegal immigrants be granted MORE freedom than American citizens?!

Okay. I bet a US citizen who forgot his/her license would not be afforded the same luxury. Nice of the LA cops to selectively enforce the law.

Isn’t that a violation of equal protection or something?

If it's so damned hard living here, just go back to wherever the hell you came from and it will be a lot easier (for you and for us).

Seems like a clear equal protection issue here. If anything, citizens should have a MORE favorable situation...

Because the America we both know & love is slowly dying.

The reason is because every illegal alien’s car you do not impound will eventually be one or more of the following:

A person who requires social services which, in turn, employes unionized Government workers to provide for them
An ACORN-SEIU-La Raza fraudulent voter who votes Democratic
A potential Democratic voter
A parent of multiple legal Democratic voters
A union employee who votes Democratic
A union employee who votes Democratic and donates to the DNC

The reason illegals are given special rights we are not afforded is that the Left, and even parts of the RINO GOP’ers see illegals as the “farm system” for the next generation of voters.

They see the Mexification of CA, NV, AZ, CO and NM as inevitiable as blacks have short life spans and whites are only having children they can afford, so it keeps family sizes down. Latinos have many children, then in subsequent generations, the successful ones end up only having 1-3 kids as the State and Federal Governments no longer pick up the tab for housing, cash, food, medical care and schooling.

The economic reality of illegal immigration is that Mexico will re-take the Southwest without firing a shot (not exactly, as gang crime shows, but you get my drift....). The Anglos will not breed themselves into obscurity and the Latinos will breed their way to prominence.

I hate to say it, but US flag waving retirees at the Mall in DC are not what fill classrooms and playgrounds these days, trust me, my son is one of the only Anglos in the sandbox, wedged between Mexican, Indian, Chinese and Arab/Muslim kids in our area, and we live in a “nice” suburb.

Demographics is destiny, we have “pilled” and culturally committed an inevitable genocide, IMHO.

This is just more lunacy we have grown to expect from Loon-town, U.S.A.

California conservatives have my empathy, but the rest can fall into the ocean for all I care.

“Okay. I bet a US citizen who forgot his/her license would not be afforded the same luxury. Nice of the LA cops to selectively enforce the law.”

The cop can determine if you have a valid drivers license based on your name and date of birth. If the license is expired or suspended your car will be towed, unless you are a Mexican.

I guess illegals are no longer "living in the shadows" (as the amnesty proponents declare), since they can openly live and flout the laws. We have a name and city...ICE would already be shipping her and her family out if we lived in normal times.

Without due process first I do not believe in property confiscation “from any legal US citizens” no matter what the charge. I understand no drivers license = no auto insurance. So by the PD selectively enforcing the law wouldn't that make the city liable if one of these illegal drivers gets into an accident after they and their car have been released?
