SDF Choppers Unable To Drop Water On Nuke Reactor Due To Radiation
TOKYO (Kyodo)--The Self-Defense Forces will not conduct a planned operation Wednesday to drop water from helicopters on the troubled No. 3 reactor of the Fukushima nuclear power plant because of the high radiation level around the plant, Defense Ministry officials said.
The Ground Self-Defense Force helicopters were on standby to drop water on the reactor as it is feared the reactor may have released radioactive steam due to damage to its containment vessel.
P!
I wonder if its possible to outfit a large airport crash firetruck with the water cannon to operate by remote control?
Or just any piece of extra heavy equipment with a water supply line attached to it and having pumps nearby sending water to a boom nozzle.
All these years we see japan as the leader of robotics, are they just used for sex toys? Sorry if thats offensive TLR.
This is when you need a blimp around....with a pretty long hose.
Flood its sewer and the overflow may help the problem.
They must of changed their minds?
Telegraph is reporting they are doing it now.
Helicopters attempt to cool Fukushima nuclear plant from the air
Japanese military helicopters dump water onto reactors at the crippled Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear complex in a desperate effort to cool them down.
I wonder how much input and involvement the West has had on this disaster.
You know I was going to actually make that same suggestion but I thought it would have been impractical.
They just tried about 1-1 1/2 hours ago, so perhaps some news orgs are slow to realize it had been canceled.
Makes sense....
Here is a brand new picture of the site from today.
I watched NHK broadcast about 20 min ago which reported SDF gave up the operation.
Nothing left to do ....except last minute ER preparations of the people.
I see a thread this morning about the American west coast is hitting panic mode. Although I am still fairly convinced this remains a localized situation. Meaning little if anything is reaching the jet-stream. A storm system might make a minor difference.
I am more concerned for out military who have troops helping with relief efforts. 0bama that red phone is still ringing... I sincerely hope and pray their commanders keep in mind every responders first priority. You can’t respond if you, yourself become a victim. I can see a lot of anger etc., if there becomes a significant exposure issue to our military. Those young men and women are not ignorant in these matters.
Anybody have access to a geological map of the ground water depth? Without being able to get water on this thing now...later it will just generate a big steam explosion. Bigger than anything we’ve witnessed so far. Exactly what would trigger my ‘west coast panic.’
*****Radio is just now saying they have worker/volunteers taking preparing to take firetrucks back into the situation...wow.
Yeah, look at that picture I posted, I have no idea how they thought it would work to start with?
Theoretically the reactors are in cold shutdown.
So theoretically they are not an active threat.
The question is, the spent fuel rod pools. If that’s on fire it will release large amounts of radioactive material into the atmosphere.
I do wonder if the spent fuel that is burning could end up melting and burning through the bottom of the storage pool.
If so, the reactor in cold shut down is directly below it...
That would seem to indicated those safely shut down reactors could still be in play.
Amazing Image. That work environment is not safe for man nor beast.
Right. The whole thing looks rather hapless.
