I post at a forum about steam power, old gas and diesel engines and generators. One of the most common complaints and questions asked there is how a new poster and owner of a military 400hz generator can use it for a home generator.

...good update page from the Brits - I’m finding they are doing better work than our papers and even Al Jazeera has more info

It's been apparent for a long time now, that the US major media is hopelessly corrupt and broken. They have utterly failed in their basic mission of honestly informing the public they (supposedly) serve.

This is why their numbers are in steady decline. Those numbers will not reverse, until someone in that industry breaks ranks with their institutionalized modus operandi.

In the meantime, eyeballs will continue go where the reportage is better.

The key word being “reliable”, for me has been FOX.

Thanks again for the live thread. Yesterday, there were so many threads all over the place, and it was hard to keep up. This is much easier to keep up with the news. Thank you!!

Dittos! Thank you, Mom.

That and the BBC one...plus streaming Japanese tv.

I don't know what I would do if I couldn't get NHK World on my non-cable TV. I have relied on them for much more extensive and even-handed coverage than could be imagined on our U.S. so-called news networks....

Can't remember the name but there was a Japanese volcano that did errupt over the weekend. It didn't do much and didn't get much attention what with everything else. Hopefully, it acted as a pressure gauge to keep Fuji or something more major from happening.

On one of the southern islands. Spouted for the first time in 50 years in January and has gone off about 10 times since. Supposedly plume on Sundayish went up something like 2 miles, but then not much else.

Heck - easy! Just hook a 400hz motor to run a 60hz genset - problem solved. lol

I thought about the pets too. Japanese are very fond of cats and also will make a pet of just about any animal.

Does anyone know what HAARP is? I’m seeing that term tossed around in connection with this fiasco in Japan.

Found on the Ticker Forum thread:

from Nuke Worker forum:

http://www.nukeworker.com/forum/index.php/topic,26998.270.html

Question: To the experts...what system lines up to remove heat from the fuel pool? And, if those pumps are not functional, how long can spent fuel site with our residual heat removal pumps? I have wondered about the fuel pools because of their close proximity to the explosion area.

Answer 1: There is normally a dedicated system that would cool the fuel pool. Oddly enough called Fuel Pool Cooling System. Basically, this system would recirculate water from the spent fuel pool through heat exchangers, cooled by a closed cooling water system, and demineralizers. Without power, this system would not be functional. The amount of time that the fuel pool could go without cooling is tough to say. It would be a function of how large the fuel pool is, the level and temperature of the water prior to losing cooling, and the amount of spent fuel, and its age, in the pool.

Answer 2: There is a fuel pool cooling system but keeping the fuel covered with water should be good enough for this situation - boiling action will remove the heat as long as water can be added. “Time to boil” is sometimes how this is measured. The amount of heat in the fuel pool will depend mostly on how much old fuel is in there and how long it has been out of the reactor. Who knows how much electric power they have and what kind of cooling capability the FPCS has at this point. There are temporary decay heat removal systems used at some plants but who knows if they have that operable or close by or at all.

Also, re: elevated rad levels at #4:

... supposedly the radiation level was 40 Rem/hr between unit 3 and 4 probably due to uncovered fuel from the unit 4 fuel pool. Not sure about this, especially the source, might be Unit 3 reactor but why unit 3 would have higher levels not sure. I would bet it was coming from the dry fuel pool...Other possiblity is the pressure decrease and all the spewed crap that came out of the unit 2 damaged suppression pool. my bet is U4 fuel pool.

The latest report I saw today is that atmospheric radiation levels over Japan are actually DROPPING now. That will not be a headline in the U.S., of course.

Agreed. I suspect the trail leads back to Moscow. David Duke via Stormfront is a player in this as well (with strong ties to Moscow himself).

I hate seeing Drudge promoting Jones’ sites. He has no idea who or what he’s dealing with.

I don’t think so. LWR technology has a safety record that no other industry or modern process can challenge. Thousands of reactor-years of operation without a single injury to a member of the general public. No other technology comes close to that in terms of real, quantifiable, not pie-in-the-sky safety record. Not aviation, not automotive, not petrochemical, not mining or extraction, not nautical or seamanship, not the homebuilding industries, nothing.

These plants need the ability to shut down on their own,

From reading several places the newer plants can in fact do that....with the flow of water not active....

This old design of GE depends on those pumps running...and (I think) Hydrogen has to be injected into the stream to stop some of the corrosive actives in the fuel and control rods....

will try to get back to the blog where I was reading that....

The hydrogen Explosions may have been as a result of that process rather than Hydrogen generated from the Reactor....the discussion in the comments to the article didn't really resolve that however.

There is a boatlad of misinformation being spread around by all of the sources as far as I am concerned.

I realize I am not leaving sources here....will work on that...got challenges here doing stuff.
