If this Dutch Bishop was around during WWII, he probably would have collaborated with the Nazis.

To my understanding it’s like getting mad at German Christians because they and German pagans both use the word “Gott”.

If Free Republic had existed in 428, I can only imagine we would have had endless threads in the Religion Forum on just that topic.

In 428 AD there'd still be people upset with calling "God" by a name that's a clear derivative of "Zeus" ~ as in "Deus".

We are all innocent of such confusion in English since we call "God" by the name "God" which is the same term "god" that we use to refer to pagan divinities!

So what? What’s the motivation to get Christians and Jews to call the God of Abraham “Allah” in present times?

Educate us. You haven’t answered that.

The god of the muslim religion requires worshipers to kill others for salvation. The God of the Bible requires that we be crucified with Christ. The God of the Bible creates. The god of islam destroys. Love creates. Hate destroys. A god who requires death and destruction isn’t worthy of worship.

Millions of Christians and Jews are already calling the God of Abraham "Allah" in present times.

Educate us.

I already did, but you apparently have reading comprehension issues.

Yes you could use that “Name”, but you need to know the correct pronunciation, also, every time you use the proper “Name” of God you should go and wash your body completely and shave yourself clean. I like what Jesus said we could call God and that is Father or Papa. I have at times when I was crying out to Him that I used the Aramaic version of Father, Abba.

English: God.

Spanish: Deos.

German: Gott.

Chinese: Shen.

French: Dieu.

Hebrew: El or Elohim.

Greek: Theos.

Latin: Deus.

Russian: Bog.

People who don’t understand the concept that different languages use different words for the same concept are remarkably ill-informed.

As you say, this is the word that was used by Arabic speaking Christians before Mohammed was born.

The word Christ used to refer to God when on the earth was in Aramaic pronounced very close to Allah, as can be seen here:

http://www.peshitta.org/cgi-bin/lexicon.cgi

Take a look at the Hebrew and Aramaic words and note how close they are to Allah, especially given that many centuries have elapsed. They’re essentially the same word in these closely related languages.

I am not addressing whether the Person referred to by the Hebrew, Aramaic and Arabic terms is the same, but that’s a completely different issue from whether the words have the same meaning.

Just to give the other side a break, you can start with http://www.islamic-awareness.org/Quran/Text/Mss/vowel.html which at least gives you the names of all the authors and scholars who have examined the matter. BTW, the weakness the pro-Arabic Koran people want to overlook is that the OLDEST Korans which are currently being studied are PRE DOT volumes. What that means is that if their arguments about the development of the DOT in Arabic are correct then the Arabic Pre Dot Koran was actually written before Mohammad lived!

To All:

Step 1: Post to THIS Post: Your suggestions for a better Title for this thread.

2. Then you can use "View Replies" to quickly view all the suggestions (if any).

A FR title can only be 100 characters / spaces or less.

Jim R does NOT like us to change the title names of existing articles. However, Jim Robinson, in situations like this, it is a mistake to let the Title remain the same as we discuss it and it will be on the FR forum board. I rarely like seeing "barf alert". FRee-Reps can do better than that. But this title should be edited or changed completely.

3. If we get any good ideas, let's ask Admin Mods to edit / change the title.

“Allah” has NO son.

Jehovah God has an eternal Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, and millions of sons made by by the New Birth.

To call Jehovah, the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, by the name of “Allah” is utter apostasy.

Odd that the Hebrew Bible uses the term many thousands of times, that is if God didn’t want us to use it.

The Name is also incorporated into a LOT of personal names of individuals in the Bible: Jesus, John, Joshua (actually same as Jesus), Jehu, Jehoshophat, etc.

In Chinese, “Shen” can also refer to any false god; any idol. It must be marked specifically when used for the True God, which is usually done by leaving an extra space before the character for Shen. In Hong Kong and Taiwan, most editions of the Chinese Union Version, 1890 (the most widely used Chinese translation) uses ShangDi for the True God and Shen for false gods.

In Chinese, “Shen” can also refer to any false god; any idol.

Same for the English word. We usually get around this by capitalization.

I'm not sure what your point is.

ShangDi was the ancient Chinese "Supreme Being" for thousands of years before Christianity. Very similar, in fact, to the position of Allah for Arabs prior to Islam. Most polytheistic religions have a "supreme god" that doesn't interfere in the slightest with their worshipping many others.
