Nuclear power is always unsafe, says Greenpeace

* From: AAP * March 14, 2011 10:22AM

ENVIRONMENTALISTS say the possibly catastrophic failure of a Japanese nuclear reactor shows that nuclear power can never be safe.

Two reactors at the Fukushima plant in north-eastern Japan have been damaged by the devastating earthquake which struck nearby on Friday, and at least one is in danger of meltdown.

Radiation has been released into the air after an explosion at one reactor, and although authorities have said it is not intense enough to affect human health, they have ordered evacuations of people living within 20km.

"This proves once and for all that nuclear power cannot ever be safe," Greenpeace campaigns head Steve Campbell said today.

"Japan's nuclear plants were built with the latest technology, specifically to withstand natural disasters, yet we still face potential meltdown," he said in a statement.

Greenpeace was also concerned about the lack of information about the total amount of radiation already released, and whether the ponds for spent radioactive fuel - outside the containment area of the reactor - were secure.

"We request that Japan's government share this information with the public immediately," he said.

The number of fatalities in US designed, built, operated nuclear power plants in the USA and the world ???

"0" - Zero like our president

In other words, Ted Kennedy killed more people than nuclear power in the USA

Let me see, did more people die from the quake and tsunami or radiation poisoning?

The answer is more nuclear plants.

You are absolutely correct....there is an element of danger in virtually everything we do. I would almost be willing to bet that more people have been killed driving to or from coal fired plants than have ever died as a result of friendly use of nuclear power. Greenpeace is the new face of socialism and their most extreme efforts will have no effect on the environment at all.Whackos with nothing better to do than harrass other people going about their business. Nuclear power plants are a Godsend in these times. They are clean, efficient, safe, ....and whatever good adjectives you can come up with....Do you realize that our nuclear powered naval vehicles don't have to be refueled for YEARS......A couple of million gallons of diesel fuel saved every few weeks adds up in a hurry!!!!

9.0 Earthquake, 30 foot tsunami, nuclear power plants do not affect human health therefore they are always dangerous. ?????!!!!!!!??????

Nuclear power is always unsafe

There is NOTHING that is totally safe.

You could die posting on the Internet if a meteor hit your house.

All decisions have risk and reward. Focusing only on the risk is the act of people who are unable to cope with life itself.

How many people die every day driving their car? How many people die because of lack of electricity in the third worlds? I am 100% certain Nuclear power has a better safety record than most every other occupation or industrial activity on the planet.

Nuclear Power is VERY SAFE. How many incidents of this type have happened to date? ONE. TMI was a different cause, was analyzed, and measures were put into place. Chernobyl was a different Rx design and a stupid intentional act. We don't even know what the end result of this incident will be yet. We don't have any data from the event to analyze yet. Jumping to conclusions is for idiots.

< / rant >

I can't stand this anymore and this has only been going on since Friday. I see Lieberman talking about a nuclear construction "pause". We cannot afford to stand still on power. Our current energy policy has gotten us nowhere and we are losing coal plants to the greenies. Windmills and solar panels are not up to the task. WE ARE IN TROUBLE IN THIS COUNTRY IF WE ALLOW THE LEFT TO CONTINUE TO STRANGLE ENERGY PRODUCTION. IT HAS TO STOP!

There, this really is < / rant >

Its the same situation our deteriorating oil and gas infrastructure faces. They’ve regulated them to the point where risk is cost effective.

A few years back when the Wolverine pipeline burst in Jackson Michigan they were forced to shut the line down permanently despite the fact that they were nearing the end of a total overhaul of the line.
