George Will on Sunday's "This Week" said what likely has been on the minds of right-thinking Americans for many decades.
"NPR is run by people who don't like people like me" (video follows with transcript and commentary):
JAKE TAPPER, HOST: Cokie, you've been at NPR for almost 40 years. Obviously this institution means a lot to you, but why should we care?
COKIE ROBERTS: Look, I should just say that they did then reject that money, and sent internal e-mails basically saying this is totally unacceptable. We have to have tax forms, all of that. So, that should be stated. But, look, we should care because 34 million people listen every week and want to get the news that you get there, that you can't get any place else. NPRs got seventeen foreign bureaus. That's something you can't say for any other broadcast organization these days. And brings you terrific information, day in and day out, week in and week out. And the reporters who are there on the line, being shot at in North Africa at the moment are being very badly served by the management thats now gone.

In this case, I think it is personal. I agree that NPR doesn't like what America means to most of us. However, I'm sure George Will has met many of the NPR people and can certainly tell he is not liked. So for him to say that, it was personal.
“NPRs got seventeen foreign bureaus. That’s something you can’t say for any other broadcast organization these days.”
That is a pretty obvious sign of overfunding when NPR can afford more foreign bureaus than major news organizations.
My sentiments exactly.
Wrong, George. You suffer from the same elitist affliction. Time to get out of DC and see what the real world is like.
Change your name to “Darwin Marx Mao Obama” and they will crown you King of the Universe.
That should be enough listeners to support NPR financially with their own money. Leave the rest of us out of it.
Yeah, if NPR thinks George Will is a right wing extremist, you can imagine the disdain they have for us.
I don’t like George Will either, but I think he means something else.
That’s a real shame, George, because we know you try so hard to be liked on the cocktail party circuit....
Not only should NPR have Congressional funding stopped, their tax-exempt status should be taken away too. Why shouldn’t they pay taxes like other businesses? Same thing for PBS. Talk about an unfair advantage.
“Tinker’s-dam - a wall of dough raised around a place which a plumber desires to flood with a coat of solder. The material can be but once used; being consequently thrown away as worthless.”
The expression is “tinker’s dam”. It’s a wall of dough raised around a place which a plumber desires to flood with a coat of solder. The material can be but once used; being consequently thrown away as worthless.
Good on George Will for telling it like it is. NPR is definitely not on our side. It does not represent all of America.
AMEN! My thoughts exactly.
Oviously Cokie does not know radio waves travel more than a few miles.
