URGENT: Miyagi police chief estimates over 10,000 deaths in Miyagi: NHK

The death toll from Friday's devastating earthquake and tsunami that hit northeastern and eastern Japan will likely exceed 10,000, the Miyagi police chief said Sunday, according to an NHK report.

Naoto Takeuchi, head of the prefectural police, was quoted as saying that ''I have no doubt'' the toll will rise that high in Miyagi Prefecture alone, the hardest-hit region, while the official tally stands at a little over 800 confirmed dead in Miyagi and other areas, the public broadcaster said.

I hope this isn’t going to put a crimp in Obama’s golf outing.

However Kyodo News has had odd forecasts. I would beware of this news source.

But it is Kyodo News reporting an NHK story. Actually, watching the tsunamis come in Thursday night (our time), I wouldn’t be surprised at all if this is correct. Remember 6000+ were killed in the Hanshin Earthquake in ‘95 and there was no tsunami there.

So sad but also so much honor, you won’t see the Japanese looting or whining about why a FEMA type of agency won’t replace their Escalade.

This a country that though being protectionists will also become a superpower as other countries in times of political discord, natural or man made disasters fall apart.

This will make Japan stronger, they won’t spend billions finger pointing at who was to blame, they are not saddled with an usurper of a leader that is not only unpatriotic but an incompetent fool.

This isn't coming from Kyodo. It's from NHK, the Japanese "NPR." "There is no doubt that the number will reach the 10,000 level," said Naoto Takeuchi.

He's the police chief of Miyagi prefecture and announced it Sunday had a meeting.

Actually, yes.

When we consider that 230,000 were killed in the Indonesia quake/tsunami a few years back. And the Japanese are well prepared.

With the tsunami hitting within 90min of the major quake, I would be surprised if the death toll is under 100,000 or with casualties less than 300,000.

It was more like within 15 minutes of the quake at the nearest shores. About the time it takes to pick yourself off the floor, find your your boots (sandals?), look at the crap thrown all around your house, and wonder how you’re going to clean it all up.

Although I know on the Washington coast, the message there is if you feel a quake, don’t do anything except get to higher ground (or a tall building). Some parts of WA coast will have about 8 minutes when the “big one” offshore hits again.

I imagine it is the same for the Japanese - but that is a LOT of folks to get to higher ground in such a short time. So sad.

Yeah, I saw NHK where this elder woman seemed to be in denial wondering where her son took shelter while also saying that he was right where the Tsunami hit. Sad.
