Immigration legislation criticized at Senate panel hearing in Savannah

Legislation that would crack down on illegal immigrants would hurt Georgia’s economy, about two dozen people told a state Senate Committee.

Almost everyone who spoke Saturday in Savannah at the third hearing of a Democrat-led study panel opposed the bills, one of which has passed in the House.

The latter would let police check to see whether people they arrest are illegal immigrants. It also would require employers to use a federal database to check the status of their workers.

Jerry Gonzalez, executive director of the Georgia Association of Latin American Elected Officials, said passing the measures could trigger an international tourism boycott.

If there is a boycott, Gonzalez said, noting that tourism is a linchpin of Savannah’s economy, “it’s going to kill jobs in Savannah. It’s going to kill jobs all across Georgia.”

Citing estimates that at least 50 percent of Georgia farm workers are illegals, he said the bills could wreck agriculture, Georgia’s top industry.

“What would happen to our agricultural industry if that work force disappeared?” he asked.

Like others, he said studies in some states say illegal immigrants pay more in taxes than the cost of state benefits they receive. Is this implying illegals are being Subsidized by the gov to receive welfare, food stamps, section 8 housing as well as medicaid which is a state service ?

The Dems always use these short-sighted and immoral reasons for not enforcing the law. I do not buy for a minute that illegals benefit more for the economy than they cost the taxpayers.

They may cover thier emergency room use, food stamps, and WIC expenses but will not cover the increase in crime and the cost of illegals arrested, legal fees, and incarceration when added to the other expenses.

“Like others, he said studies in some states say illegal immigrants pay more in taxes than the cost of state benefits they receive.”

Which is of course total BS. Consider the cost of educating one child at 6 to 10 thousand dollars. Add another 8K for medical. How many illegals even make that much (if they paid 100% in taxes)

G_damned ‘’Latinos’’ make a mess of their countries, break in here and then start telling Americans what the f’ing deal is. I’m sick of this sh!t. Go home and fix your damn countries instead of running away from them!

The Fiscal Burden of Illegal Immigration on United States Taxpayers

This report estimates the annual costs of illegal immigration at the federal, state and local level to be about $113 billion; nearly $29 billion at the federal level and $84 billion at the state and local level. The study also estimates tax collections from illegal alien workers, both those in the above-ground economy and those in the underground economy. Those receipts do not come close to the level of expenditures and, in any case, are misleading as an offset because over time unemployed and underemployed U.S. workers would replace illegal alien workers.

Key Findings

Illegal immigration costs U.S. taxpayers about $113 billion a year at the federal, state and local level. The bulk of the costs — some $84 billion — are absorbed by state and local governments.

The annual outlay that illegal aliens cost U.S. taxpayers is an average amount per native-headed household of $1,117. The fiscal impact per household varies considerably because the greatest share of the burden falls on state and local taxpayers whose burden depends on the size of the illegal alien population in that locality

Education for the children of illegal aliens constitutes the single largest cost to taxpayers, at an annual price tag of nearly $52 billion. Nearly all of those costs are absorbed by state and local governments.

At the federal level, about one-third of outlays are matched by tax collections from illegal aliens. At the state and local level, an average of less than 5 percent of the public costs associated with illegal immigration is recouped through taxes collected from illegal aliens.

Most illegal aliens do not pay income taxes. Among those who do, much of the revenues collected are refunded to the illegal aliens when they file tax returns. Many are also claiming tax credits resulting in payments from the U.S. Treasury.

Jerry Gonzalez, executive director of the Georgia Association of Latin American Elected Officials, said passing the measures could trigger an international tourism boycott.

After hearing Jerry Gonzalez at the Dalton, Georgia, meeting, the impressing I got was he'd tell any number of lies to get amnesty for illegals. I got so upset I told him he was lying and walked out. I think he sees himself in the White house some day. I e-mailed him at GALEO's web site telling him that Americans have been lied to and disrespected on the issue of illegal immigration. How illegals don't pay taxes and do burden taxpayers with; educational, crime and medical costs. He e-mailed back saying he could tell I was frustrated over illegal immigration and to call him to discuss the issue. I'm not frustrated, I'm angry.
