Senator wants alcohol breath-test machine in your car!

Sen. Tom Udall, D-N.M., is the lead player in a legislative effort, already endorsed by a handful of other senators, that would spend $60 million to develop a program that would charge consumers for the costs of installing drunk-driving interlock devices in vehicles.

The proposal, S.510, was introduced this week in the U.S. Senate by Udall, who was joined by Sens. Mark Begich, D-Alaska, Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, Bob Corker, R-Tenn., Al Franken, D-Minn., Amy Klobuchar D-Minn., West John D. Rockefeller, D-W.Va., Charles Schumer, D-N.Y. and Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I.

The legislation actually doesn't call for the technology to be installed in every vehicle but urges "more widespread deployment of in-vehicle technology to prevent alcohol-impaired driving." The device already is ordered into use sometimes by courts addressing cases of drunk drivers who offend repeatedly.

The proposal delivers $12 million to promoters of the program in each of five years for what the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration calls the Driver Alcohol Detection System for Safety.

The "fact sheet" posted by the federal agency describes the interest in "technologies that will quickly and accurately measure a driver's blood alcohol concentration (BAC) in a non-invasive manner. If the system detects that a driver is drunk, the vehicle will be disabled from being driven."

It has been suggested that a tissue spectrometry program, a touch-based approach in which sensors would measure the level of alcohol in tissue, might be used. Or the program might use the infrared light spectrum to "detect alcohol concentration in the driver's exhaled breath."

This will P O local gov because they will lose revenues on DWI.

Just watch:

1. The First year or so the Breathalyzer will just prevent you from driving the car.

2. After that the car doors also lock and can’t be opened from the interior and the On-Star system will automatically call the nearest Police Station and ask them to send an officer to your location so as to arrest you for DUI.

This $60 million to “develop the technology” is pure bullshit! The technology already exists! The money will go to some well connected company who gave money to some senator. Guaranteed.

The guy who swiped the idea for the seatbelt (originally intended for racecar drivers) to sell it through Sears, eventually got a friend in Congress to push the idea nationwide. Once it became law, he became amazingly wealthy.

To this day, he forbids his kids, ex-wife, and extended family from working or even going to college with the threat of cutting off their money if they ever do. One of his sons is now in prison in SoCal for killing a pedestrian while driving drunk.

Not every state has reservations full of thirsty dwellers who get drunk in the morning and then venture out on the interstate...the wrong way!

IMO, that would be where Liberals have their heads plugged into and, yes, no sun shines there.

I would add that their heads contain no brain cells. Liberals = useful idiots. They’re being used by wannabe dictators such as Obummer et al!

Ah, the party of the little guy.

This will cost me an extra thousand every time I buy a car...and I don’t drink so it’s a complete waste of money. Democrats love dumping unfunded mandates on consumers.

The guy is from New Mexico. Do the liquor stores there still have drive-in windows?

No.

I was one of the organizers for the final-shot tour of drive-up liquor windows in NM.

Hired 4 buses, full load of people on every one. Made every drive-up window that we knew of in the state. 400 miles high, 400 miles wide.

It was a blast.

Make the laws stricter!

Statist.

The devices that now exist require a periodic blow at random intervals from 3 - 20 minutes.

Take your control-freak tendencies elsewhere.

It would never register anything with me. I’ve never taken to drinking and never touch the stuff. I can’t stand coffee either but love the aroma.

Do you use mouthwash, aftershave, ever have paint, glue, varnish or any sort of aromatic aerosols on or around you?

If so, your car won't start and you will be reported to the authorities.

Having never tasted alcohol, this would not be necessary for me. But, I buy 13 year old cars, so I won’t have to even think about it for a while.

Don't spill any fuel on yourself.

Your federal government has mandated alcohol in your fuel tank, but none in you.

Welcome to your national jail.

“would spend $60 million to develop a program that would charge consumers for the costs of installing drunk-driving interlock devices in vehicles.

I’m sure that someone already connected these dots, but I gotta take a break from work for a moment.

Let’s see, the bill funds $60M to be funded by “consumers” or more accurately taxpayers. The courts already require this device to be installed and I am sure that this is not a “free” action. Instead, I’m sure that it is part of the “probation costs” involved with that sentence/requirement.

So, all the bill does is shift $12M a year for 5 years to the “promoters” of the device. 12x5=$60M total. Not even to the manufacturer, or the installer, or the tracking software company. Just to the “promoter.” My bet is that MADD is the biggest, if not the only promoter!

Sounds like a stealth taxpayer funded infusion to MADD!

Listen, we’re setting the breathalyser level at 0.16, that’s four beers in a couple of hours, you can’t be against that even if the DUI roadblock is an unconstitutional travesty, but rights should not be used to allow drunks to drive.....

And now..........
