Orderly disaster reaction in line with deep cultural roots

The layer of human turmoil - looting and scuffles for food or services - that often comes in the wake of disaster seems noticeably absent in Japan.

“Looting simply does not take place in Japan. I’m not even sure if there’s a word for it that is as clear in its implications as when we hear ‘looting,’" said Gregory Pflugfelder, director of the Donald Keene Center of Japanese Culture at Columbia University.

Japanese have “a sense of being first and foremost responsible to the community,” he said.

I live in “town” but there are only around 150 people here. We’d be fine if we were cut off for a while because we still take dinner to an elderly neighbor who can’t get out or something. If a major storm comes through and takes down trees, we’ll have the roads cleared inside of 24 hours.

I think its really a flyover thing and the biggest underestimation urban liberals make when they stir themselves to a frenzy like in Madison Wisconsin.

Here those that would not loot nor want to be looted, have to have the added task of defending themselves against the scum in our society our political hacks refuse to deal with appropriately for one politically correct reason or another.

...of course, until relatively recently they also has an emperor whom they worshipped as a living god, so it can go a little far, eh?

Just as America has one now. One that 50% of the populace worships, anyway. History does seem to repeat itself, doesn't it.

Ever wonder why the people of Haiti don’t build electronic wonders or produce nice cars? The environment creates the culture.

So, you’re saying that temperate climates produce advanced cultures and tropical climes produce indolence?

I saw that, too. Pretty interesting aspect of their society. Thank goodness we still have a degree of that in the South. It’s slowly fading away, tho.

Same thing here in Midwest. I helped with the flood control
in ‘93 and there was no looting. Some big shot reporter told
a sandbagger he was amazed there was none. The sandbagger
replied with “you’d get shot”. The surprised reporter asked
if the police had been authorized to shoot. “Police?” said
the incredulous sandbagger.

And further, what ethnicity did not loot and pillage NO? Please...I held a completely non racial view point until Katrina and 9/11. The evidence is in the records.

Japan has a lack of “diversity”.

The little factory I worked for in 93 let an Iowa native that worked with us go to help with sandbagging. He ended up taking two other young guys with him to help. My boss paid them all for 40 hours per week for the 10 days they were there.
