Catastrophic risk is what useful market regulation appropriately proscribes. (E.g., in financial markets and for the environment.)

No, if someone believes that punishment (vengeance) is justified because it's a deterrent, I probably won't convince them otherwise. Same with those that believe "eye-for-an-eye", etc. Unless they're open to reflection on the subject, I probably won't convince them.

I do believe in restitution when possible, but the death penalty doesn't restore anything and does not help the families of the victim. It is well documented that the ONLY road to healing and resolution for families of the victim is FORGIVENESS. There are countless examples of those who won't forgive and want vengeance for what some maniac did to their child, say. This, of course, is understandable.

Nevertheless, if these people at some point don't allow the Lord to help them forgive, then THEY are the ones in the prison of hate and bitterness for the rest of their lives.

The sad story of my sister who I loved. She died of cancer, but she really died of what just about everyone who knew her said: it was bitterness and unforgiveness that actually killed her.

Point being, the death penalty doesn't help the victims, so you're back to punishment and "eye-for-an-eye" justice. As I said, these can be argued for and against, but not with those who are closed to proven and viable alternatives.

Per Fox News, a Red Alert has been issued for ANOTHER nuclear plant. I have not further information.

I think fusion as a potential alternative is suggested on my original post.

I'm not convinced that any operating nuclear power plant is safe. All it takes is one freaking meltdown to kill everyone within the affected radius.

I'm not just a nay-sayer - the alternative fusion technology needs stepped up R&D.

Name one source of energy that is completely safe. Do you advocate for the elimination of all energy generation, because it’s not 100% safe?

We will agree to disagree. I do not want to let murderous scum live on the chance they might do it again - which has happened many times - not worth the risk.

There are much newer designs of reactors where a meltdown will not happen ....these old Westinghouse Reactors are very old designs.

OK, well this is something I didn’t know. So you’re saying that a complete meltdown will not kill people? How do LWR’s fix that?

Eye for eye is usually taken out of context, that actually refers to Gods vengeance. I do believe it is biblical that some crimes do deserve death. Not as a deterrent but as justice for the family and for society. Forgiveness does not negate consequences for ones crimes. Christ bore our sin and received the penalty we deserve which was/is death. A free gift for those that receive but it cost Christ everything.

Not convinced a meltdown will not happen but someone is suggesting LWR technology somehow naturalizes its deadly effects. It would be nice if that were true and if true that every operating nuclear plant had that technology.

Right, and what did he say on the cross? "It is finished." Everything you and I and everyone else has ever done or will ever do has already been paid for on the cross 2000 years ago. This is grace beyond our capacity to understand or comprehend (Eph 2:7). We are living in an age when "mercy rejoices against judgment" (James 2:13), and you're talking to someone who's in law school - how 'bout them apples?

"Another is nuclear power plants: I'm ag'in 'em also."

Hummm, entire communities just disappear, trains missing and you just think there is something seriously wrong with a nuclear plant that is built to protect the public and has, so far, proved to be working despite so very serious challenges. Very curious.

You have no clue, neither the Japanese currently having problems or the TMI reactor have anything to do with the Westinghouse design. So if your real problem is the design of nuclear plants maybe you should educate yourself.

Maybe just melt, kind of like in a Salvador Dalí painting.

I’d guess he is against earthquakes and tsunamis as well.

Conservatism is sometimes referred to as the tragic vision, because conservatives do not believe men or their creations have Godlike perfectibility. Thus, they believe they should modestly plan and live for a minimizing of the effects of human error.

Ah yes - conservatism tries to embrace the ancient value of REASON in their lives. The ancient value of reason (Aquinas, etc.) included the belief that God gave man reason to help him discern justice and truth in how we should live.
