TOKYO – Japan declared states of emergency for five nuclear reactors at two power plants after the units lost cooling ability in the aftermath of Friday's powerful earthquake. Thousands of residents were evacuated as workers struggled to get the reactors under control to prevent meltdowns.

Nope, its Japan. Its still a very male-centered society. Tokyo just proposed the other day to finally outlaw the possession of kiddie porn.

Hey France last year finally around to making incest illegal.

Ping - See the replied to post. For your consideration.

It will be interesting to see if people like Schiff or Zerohedge address this.

2% of Japanese are said to be true Christians. But Christian customs are quite popular also among the non-Christian population. 60% [mol] are said to really love the holiday spirit that surrounds Christmas with presents, even having Turkey. I think younger generations to come will bring those percentages higher.

As a professional engineer, it sounds like the pumps were damaged. It seems to me not enough redundacy was built in.

There was a Japanese engineer on Fox around 5:00. He said there were three problems. The earthquake scrammed the reactor. A fire in the switching plant cut off the plant from outside power. The tsunami caused saltwater contamination to the diesel backup. Now what they meant by "saltwater contamination" wasn't explained. It might be some sea water got into the fuel tanks, or that the entire power house is under 30 feet of water. All i have is that one sentence.

The Japanese have been good friends for 60 years...it is heartbreaking.

Agreed! Hopefully Obama won't screw this one up. At least he sent the carrier USS Ronald Reagan to help.

I understand that Japan is extremely male-centered, but am not sure how that translates into its being PervertLand. Seems something of a quantum leap Kiddie porn seems to exist whether it’s legal or not, probably always has and always will because there are some very sick people out there, and money to be made, but I’d wager it’s as much in the US as anywhere. Just seems an odd part of a Japanese subculture to focus on and represent as covering the entire country.

Um, in Japan about 50% are not religious, but the rest are Shinto, Buddhist, and Christian. And there are some who use a little of this, a little of that...

Not enough children born, aging population

Yes, but they were getting an incentive: "cash for kids" to build up the population? even though there is a waiting list at day care centers. Sounds like American/Japanese speaking entrepreneurs could build on that.

C'mon folks. I'm pretty sure Ev Reeman was simply intending a bit of humor, not much different from the pictures posted on other threads earlier. Misplaced? Perhaps, and I would think so too given the growing gravity of the situation.

But please lighten up a little. I don't think he intended it to be malicious.

PervertLand because nowhere else on Earth is this stuff so celebrated and accepted. Kiddie porn is apparently legal to possess in Tokyo, that is pictures and videos of CHILD RAPE.

More than 600 victims of this came forward last year, no telling how many stayed silent. Unfortunately looks like they will just have to keep wondering who on the bus/train/class is looking at them funny because they own some of those videos of their rape.

Child prostitution is just seen as a way for a little girl to earn some spending money.

That is a sick society.

My daughter spent 2 years living in a rural village in Japan (in Fukushima Prefecture where the much discussed nuclear reactor is, as a matter of fact). The people there were absolutely wonderful to her I know that is not the case nationwide, where foreigners often remain suspect

The day she left, half the village came out to the train station to see her off, had hosted parties, teas, luncheons and dinners to celebrate her farewell and to thank her for her contribution to their children’s lives as a teacher of English. Gifts you wouldn’t believe! So I have a soft spot in my heart for those people.

One Christmas she came home, and upon arriving at Reagan National was astonished at how minimally it was ‘done up’ for the holiday vs. Tokyo and even her little village. See, at Reagan National and across the US we don’t want to offend anyone!

I didn't think a reactor problem would take 12+ hours to develop.

The problem (as I understand it; I'm an engineer but not a NucE) is that the reactor core is so hot that even if you shut it down immediately in the earthquake, which these were designed to do and in fact did, it takes 24 to 48 hours to bring the core down to a temperature where it won't melt down if not cooled.

Apparently the loss of the backup/emergency diesel generators to the tsunami left them with only 8 hours of battery-powered cooling. Not enough.

(I got to tour an aircraft carrier a few years ago, and was a bit surprised that it took something like 48 hours or so --number forgotten-- to get the reactor up to operating temp. Not a case of inserting the key, turning the ignition switch, and roaring off.)

I hate to sound crass at a time like this but when you’ve worked in finance for 38 years, such thoughts just seem to come naturally.

Until things sort themselves out better, I’ll concentrate on prayer for Japan.

Can they dump a bunch of graphite control rods into the reactor core and shut it down that way? Or have they already tried that by now? Just wondering.

From what I understand, it shut down immediately. But will take a LONG time to cool the core to below meltdown temps.

The control room supposedly.

Breaking news situations out of a disaster zone are always full of false reports.

If this is true than they better be talking about moving heaven and earth to get a hold on the situation. This area is densely populated and Japan can’t afford to just abandon in for a few decades while they scrub the fallout.
