TOKYO Japan declared states of emergency for five nuclear reactors at two power plants after the units lost cooling ability in the aftermath of Friday's powerful earthquake. Thousands of residents were evacuated as workers struggled to get the reactors under control to prevent meltdowns.

Most Japanese are atheists, but I will say a prayer for them anyway.
I agree that there’s not going to be a full core meltdown. But if the backup cooling systems were damaged by the quake, that could greatly complicate the situation. It’s odd that radiation levels outside the plant are reportedly 8X normal levels. That probably means some radioactive steam has already been vented out of the plant. But overall I’m confident that these plants were designed to get through a huge earthquake list this one without a major disaster.
Do you have a source for that, or did you just make it up?
In modern plants when the core melts it will melt the steel and concrete around it. When this happens the uranium is no longer as pure and thus the reaction slows down to the point where the mixture hardens. This is all suppose to happen within the containment building and not cause any build up of pressure which could cause an explosion.
Huh? Who said “normal” is zero? Only libs think Zero is normal.
The coolant water's temperature had reached boiling temperature, the agency reported, citing the power plant's operator, Tokyo Electric Power.
...
Authorities have ordered the evacuation of all civilians in a two-mile radius around the No.1 plant, a total of about 3,000 people, and planned to vent slightly radioactive steam from the plant, located about 160 miles north of Tokyo.

That was supposed to say:

Very true and thank you for your post. Two thousand times normal would be a critical problem either. ;)
Prayers up for Japan.
Spread the word.
DOH!!!!
Will this work better “0”?
Radiation detected at a central control unit at Tokyo Electric Power Co's No.1 reactor at Fukushima Daiichi plant is not at a level that would require workers at the plant to evacuate, a trade ministry official said on Saturday.
The radiation at the control unit has risen to about 1,000 times the normal level, the official said..--Reporting by Osamu Tsukimori
The MSM is good at sensationalizing. Fear is a powerful tool.
Yes, this is tragic..BUT I have faith in Japan, as they are well aware they are in a high stress location, thus they build on their real estate accordingly. I am sure they know what they are doing with backups for backups. The Anti-nuke-energy crowd will play off this and are.
"The United States has transported coolant to a Japanese nuclear plant affected by a massive earthquake and will continue to assist Japan, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Friday. "We just had our Air Force assets in Japan transport some really important coolant to one of the nuclear plants," Clinton said at a meeting of the President's Export Council.
"You know Japan is very reliant on nuclear power and they have very high engineering standards but one of their plants came under a lot of stress with the earthquake and didn't have enough coolant," Clinton said
Can they dump a bunch of graphite control rods into the reactor core and shut it down that way? Or have they already tried that by now? Just wondering.
These reactors have multiple, layered safety systems for just such an eventuality. Hope and pray for the best. There is enough known horror for the time being.
FYI, Hillary lied about the coolant. Link on Drudge has the Air Force saying they didn’t ship any coolant, or anything else. But they are willing to help however needed.
Amen
I hope this is a repeat of the hysteria over Cassini’s one in a million chance of reentry during the flyby. People were having kittens. My dad built the the thing and described the containment on the propulsion system. It was pure fearmongering.
I hope u understood my unsaid /s. :o)
If the normal level is essentially zero, then 1000X normal could still be close to zero and safe. It’s also a question of where in the plant the radiation is 1000X normal...hopefully not where people are working.
Radiation levels inside the reactor are normally lethal...........
