What is the worst case scenario here?

So just how close are these reactors to the coastal areas?
To: circlecity
From what I’ve heard the worst case is a meltdown but not loss of containment.
The Japanese understand nuclear power, I have faith they are doing everything they can and will prevail.

Worst case scenarion is a meltdown of the cores, whereby the nuclear material burns its way through the containment vessel bottom, until it reaches the water table, and explodes, then cools.
The resultant radiation leakage into the atmosphere will render many square miles un-safe, possibly un-inhabitable.

Whatever the outcome, this will be the reason that opponents of nuclear power here in the US give for not allowing any more building here.

The next 6 months will be riddled with promoting "wind power" and other worthless ventures by those born at Yasgur’s Farm back in the ‘60’s because of this news.

The TOTUS gets re-elected for another term.
Oh you mean nuclear. Sorry.
Just the usual. Massive containment failure, excessive radiation leaks, death and destruction for generations.
To: circlecity
What is the worst case scenario here?
A “China Syndrome”, full-blown reactor meltdown.
Think Chernobyl.

They ask Obama for help. He sends Hillary. The Japanese could use their severe monitoring of the situation and their deep concern because of it right about now.

Chernobyl, but in a more densely populated area in a much smaller country.
At least that is my take.

From what Ive heard the worst case is a meltdown but not loss of containment. As long as it wasn't the Russians who built it the outcome will be less than the worse case scenario.

Nuke Plants normally have a 3x safety factor with quadruple redundancies.
Precautions are absolutely sane to take, but I think everyone is getting a feeling that these are close calls.
Bad press for the nuke industry but if they didn’t do it, they would be castigated. I am sure they have it well in hand.

Unfortunatly msnbc was on here in the ColdOnes household. Chris Mathews just said to look for anti nuke people in this country to use this for not building nuke power here. I wonder how bad it is really? I sure hope not.
