Someone pointed out that thermal dynamics was not understood when the first steam engines were invented either.

I’m a patent attorney, so I have seen my share of the good and the really bad of new inventions. Making something work although you really don’t understand how it works (at least not at first) happens all the time. Unexpected results happen. But making something that works that goes AGAINST generally understood laws/theories is something that deserves a little more scrutiny.

In my younger (hungrier) days as a patent attorney, I visited many an inventors lab (garage) only to find out that his energy machine wouldn’t run itself “just because I didnt have a big enough sprocket on the input side” or the like. Even these people could get investors. The opportunity to get rich quick is an enticing drug.

Now I tend to press a bit more for them to call when when they have it completely working, and they can bring it or a video to me. I haven’t seen anything yet that is as drastic as this guy claims.

Not that some very interesting workable things don’t come across my desk - but they tend to come from people that do it for living.

They understand “How” it works, but it breaks several models of “Why” things work. There ‘should be’ some high levels of Gamma radiation - but there isn’t.

You put Nickel in - you get Copper out. The proton from the Hydrogen gets stuck into the Nickel, bumping it up the periodic table. You create LOTS of heat, and consume very, very little Nickel.

Consider, 7 ounces of powered Nickel, a tank of Hydrogen and you get 10,000 Watts of energy out for a period of about 6 months. Some of that 7 ounces of Nickel is now Copper.

No radiation is escaping, no residual radiation. This has been demonstrated in a public display, with reporters and Physisists from around the world in attendance. 400 Watts into the engine - Nickel and Hydrogen fuel and some unknown catylist - 10,400 Watts output for several minutes.

In the lab, with heat exchangers, this unit has ran for tens of thousands of hours.

And, finally this gentleman USING HIS OWN MONEY is building 128 copies of this generator, to build a commercial 1 Megawatt (1,000,000 Watt) generation plant. This plant will serve three purposes.

1) Provide an income.
2) Demonstrate that his process is repeatable and dependable
3) Show economies of scale. less than 1 cent per KWhr electricity as well as 0.004 cents/KWhr of steam for heating.

Quite the scam, huh? He’s scammed himself out of his own money. < /sarcam>

The University of Bologna in Italy, is one of Italy’s most prestegious universities. Think Harvard endorsing a scientist here. It appears to be the real deal.

It is also quite likely that even if this reaction does produce a net energy gain, the gain will be too small to function as a practical source of energy.

False assumption. He is not 'creating' energy - he is using a fuel (Nickel and Hydrogen). Just like your car, you drop a substancial amount of power out of your battery to start the engine, the engine starts burning gasoline mixed with air - and you get substancially more power out of your car's engine than your battery put in, and continues to pour in. Try disconnecting your battery on your gas engine - and the engine will stall. Does this mean you are creating energy? Or somehow 'creating' energy? No.

This process takes 400 Watts to sustain - and delivers in excess of 10,000 Watts by catelizing Nickel and Hydrogen into Copper.

Yes, the catalyst is the secret element here — he won’t reveal this trade secret until a patent is granted.

Rossi did say, here or somewhere else, that he would proceed with his business plan whether or not the patent was granted.

Okay, then the question becomes one of how much energy is produced by the "fuel." How much copper and hydrogen does it take to produce one MW, for example?

If this turns out to really work, then there will suddenly be a great deal of demand for nickel, with resultant rise in price.

Although copper may suddenly become cheaper. :)

Even Baking Soda and Vinegar produce heat, I wouldn’t get too excited.

Really? ~7 ounces of Powered Nickel and a tank of Hydrogen gas produce 10,000 Watts continuously for ~6 months - and you compare this to Baking Soda and Vinegar?

From Wiki:

In terms of supply, the Sudbury region of Ontario, Canada, produces about 30% of the world’s supply of nickel. The Sudbury Basin deposit is theorized to have been created by a meteorite impact event early in the geologic history of Earth. Russia contains about 40% of the world’s known resources at the Norilsk deposit in Siberia. The Russian mining company MMC Norilsk Nickel obtains the nickel and the associated palladium for world distribution. Other major deposits of nickel are found in New Caledonia, France, Australia, Cuba, and Indonesia

No mention of any in the Middle East

Good questions.

First, the fuel is Hydrogen and Nickel, and 400 Watts of electrical power.

Copper is the waste product, along with 10,000+ Watts of steam.

The steam does 2 things, first it turns a steam turbine to generate electrical power, and the exta is used for heating.

This man is building 128 of these units, which will all heat water together, to get his 1 Megawatt plant operational by the end of this year. He is financing this himself.

An counce of Nickel currently costs about 30 cents. His machine burns 7 ounces with Hydrogen and runs about 6 months. So, we are talking about $2.10 worth of Nickel.

Now, in full disclosure - not all the Nickel reacts- in fact less than 1% reacts. He doesn’t know the particulars - and at this point in time has bigger problems to dedicate himself to. I have no doubt that more efficient means of processing the Nickel, or making it more consumable will be created later down the road. But in the grand scheme of things - this really is a ‘who cares?’ type of issue.

Nickel is the 25th most abundant element on earth. We ain’t gonna run out anytime soon.

"Try disconnecting your battery on your gas engine - and the engine will stall."

I think you need to check your alternator. That does not happen with my truck unless the alternator's broken or breaking.

The amount of energy this will eventually give depends on the availability of the consumed ingredients. How much nickel, and how much of the secret catalyst is around, where is it located, and how much will it cost to obtain.

If the secret catalyst is a rare earth metal, and most of it is say in China, it may not help us as much as we would like in the long run.

*One question only: is cold fusion a practical, workable reality?

One has visions of the “Mr. Fusion” reactor mounted on the hood of Dr. Emmett Brown’s automobile.....*

The REAL question is, has the flux capacitor been perfected?

This is going to revolutionize the world.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed. We should have been sinking millions into cold fusion all along instead of green energy rip-off artists. There is something going on but can nickel-matrix cold fusion be brought to commercial use?

***“secret catalysts”?***

Being hawked by Dr. Scam-I-Am, no less.

If Scam-I-Am had said the catalysts were not going to be identified until the patents had been issued, I would hjave been less snarky.

“Secret” catalysts aren’t - not in this environment of cheap and speedy analytical equipment. As soon as the first working system based upon the “secret catalyst’ was delivered, it would be analyzed and the “secret” would no longer be a secret.

Google Eestor, aluminum batteries, ENECO thermoelectric, etc.

There are many companies that have generated millions in investments that never had a working unit and disappeared without ever producing anything.

I think we are gonna find out shortly if this is commercially viable. I’d put my money, house, car, savings, 1 kidney, 1 lung and both of the ‘boys’ on the bet.

Consider, Nickel sells for about 30 cents an ounce. Hydrogen tanks are fairly inexpensive too. Hydrogen is the most common element on earth, Nickel is #25.

7 ounces of Nickel (~$2.10) + Hydrogen gas + 400 watts of electrical power (I pay 6 cents/1 KWhr) yields about 6 months of operation at 10,000 Watts output.

He is building 128 units, all heating water at the same time, that will turn 1 or more steam turbines to generate a 1 MegaWatt of electrical power. Just a rough, guess here. $2.10 x 128 units is ~$268 worth of Nickel, plus say another $500 worth of Hydrogen will run a 1 MegaWatt power plant for 6 months of 24/7 operation.

Wanna compare that against a coal fired plant? They generally burn 1 train-car load of coal per hour.

My point was, there have been many scams where things are rigged up and a simple chemical reaction is used to mask the scam.

There was a guy in Poland making the same claim.

It turned out that he had rigged the meters and had a similar chemical reaction going on to create heat to trick the audience.

The hoax was exposed when they asked him to power a 1500 hp motor that the university supplied and would control.

He was maintaining the hoax up to that point because he said he was protecting his secrets. With the motor, when it arrived he disappeared with all the investor’s money.

I think you need to check your alternator. That does not happen with my truck unless the alternator's broken or breaking.

Good point.

My point was that when an engine runs (except diesels), many engines continue to require an energy input. A viable engine outputs more power than it inputs. Many people called this a scam, saying you cannot create energy - which is true. But, this man is using a fuel and involving a Nuclear reaction that does not mesh well with the models we have learned. The fact is that we do not understand nearly as much about Quantum Mechanics as we would like to believe. If we did, then CERN has wasted a phenominal amount of money building the European Supercollider. But, the Supercollider has brought to light discoveries we still not fuly understand.

This man has a repeatable, safe, economical way to produce energy without any toxic waste products. He is financing this himself - no tax dollars, no investors (yet) and building a proof-of-concept power plant out of his own pocket. What more do you want?
