As white Americans move into the minority, some are claiming they're the ones now subject to racial oppression. Do they have a case?
For a small, nerdy cluster of folk -- social science and cultural studies wonks, market researchers, armchair political pundits -- this month is the Super Bowl, Oscars and Olympics rolled into one. That's because the next few weeks will see the gradual, yet grand unveiling of data from the 2010 U.S. Census, an event literally 10 years in the making.
The direction the numbers are headed isn't likely to be surprising: The trend line of increasing racial and ethnic diversity seen in the past three Censuses is expected to continue deep into this century, with experts generally marking 2050 as the year that -- barring radical shifts in policy or social trends -- the U.S. is projected to become "majority minority," with non-Hispanic whites making up less than 50 percent of the population.
But what will this mostly nonwhite America look like? Well, it's likely to be fairly familiar to most of the readers of this column. In the words of Brookings Institution policy fellow William Frey, "More and more, the country is going to look like California."
If that's the case, here's what the future holds for the nation. Based on the Census's just-released topline data for the state, as of 2010, California's population was 37.6 percent Hispanic/Latino, 14.9 percent Asian, 7.2 black -- and 42.3 percent non-Hispanic white. By 2020, Hispanics will have passed non-Hispanic whites as the state's single largest population.
As CNN's John Blake points out in a recent hotly-debated article titled "Are whites racially oppressed?," this projected Californication of American demographics has pushed simmering white feelings of dispossession into the cultural mainstream....

Affirmative Action will end the day Whites start legitimately demanding special treatment as a “minority”.
A candidate for mayor in my city announced at a fund raising event for the local Food Pantry last night, that we are the second most “diverse” city in MA. Some applauded. Most of us just looked at each other trying to figure out why that is a positive. The biggest complaint I hear about the city is that nobody knows their neighbors anymore.
I realized white was the new black when I heard someone say: “You are sooooo white!” and it was not a compliment.
Whites are doing this to themselves. It’s incredible the self loathing among many whites.
Now, as whites slip into the minority, and being white becomes a liability, do you think blacks and hispanics will come to the rescue, ala 1970s white America? You know, “White is beautiful” and affirmative action for whites?
I won’t be around to see it, but when whites are completely under the boot, I don’t expect any mercy. And whites will deserve it, as they’ve allowed this to happen.
We often hear liberals talk about celebrating diversity. Diversity is our strength and all that.
The homosexual community urges us to celebrate diversity of a different type.
But the unspoken, unwritten assumption is that diversity is a good thing.
Due to political correctness, we can’t openly question these assumptions.
Is all this diversity really a benefit? We’re not really allowed to discuss it openly, are we?
As far as all these racial/ethnic categories are concerned, it may not portend problems.
A multi-ethnic America is ok as long as all these various peoples adhere to our values. A multi-cultural America will become balkanized, and will erode our country and culture.
There’s a difference between being multi-ethnic and multi-cultural.
Immigrants coming to America to become part of America and working for America is a good thing. Immigrants or groups such as Muslims who want to fundamentally transform America is not a good thing.
The racial/ethnic diversity is part of this larger discussion about what America will look like in the future.
If I recall correctly, today, over 50% of Kindergarten students are members of some minority group or other. There’s your next generation. We’ll see how many assimilate and how many demand to be separatists of one kind or another.

By and large, different races seem not to like one another.
You don’t have to wonder, just look around the world to the countries where Blacks and Hispanics are the majority. There is the future of the US.
No whites are not doing this to themselves. Socialists are doing this.

Notice how in commercials if there is a stupid person, it’s almost always a white guy. The smart person can be a white woman or a black man or woman, but never a white guy.
I work at a large east-coast University/Med center complex. my department is looking for new people - the scuttlebutt is they’re not interested in white men...
91% of Black voters support Obama. If 91% of white voters supported George Bush, they would have been called RACIST! ...wait, aren’t we still called RACISTS?
I work for a large privately owned restaurant chain. My company is the same way. They never say it, but all you have to do is look at who they hire and promote. That’s not scuttlebutt, that’s “Just The Way It Is”.

Sorry, but socialists have a race. Most of the socialists I know are white.
It’s high time whites got organized and looked out for their interests. I have kids, they need political representation and politicians aren’t interested in people that look like them, no they’re interested in catering to NAACP/CAIR/LaRaza.
And anyone here who thinks CAIR, LaRaza, NAACP, etc., will some day disband is smoking dope. The 1965 Immigration Bill has already done it’s damage. It’s time to put this rubbish of “we are the world” behind us and start playing the game to win.
Yes the communist are doing it and it starts in Washington where they have the most ignorant blacks around..and they are making the laws for everyone..The blacks I know are educated and are Christians not slaves like the one in Washington and in states where they vote for the person that has the same color skin they do..
We all should start yelling racist every time a black politician opens his or her mouth..
Bingo we have winner. It won’t matter if whites drop to less than 20% of the population there will never be any special treatment. Whites are the only race afflicted with the guilt gene. Other races don’t feel the need to justify their majorities and will use that new found political power to consolidate power and push whites out of the picture without a second thought.
