I see the real reason why the draft was abandoned. Could anyone muster an image of this gaggle of misfits protecting the country?
These punks are just freeloaders, drifters, maybe students, anarachists & socialists. I bet not a single one of them even belongs to a union. These punk bastards are here for the party & anarchy & vandalism. Ship them all over to their peoples republics of Cuba & North Korea to work in the fields. Like it said in George Orwell’s “1984”, Work is Freedom. What a bunch of punk bastard kids!
I’m having a hard time seeing how this helps the Union cause. But then I’m not as smart as a liberal.
Dudes!
Party on!
Yeah, real salt of the earth.
These cannot be school teachers.
If they are it’s no wonder the kids arent getting an education.
Yup. My dad was career Navy, and he, (and his fellows), were SO glad when it stopped. Used to say that the service wasn’t a good place to have folks who didn’t want to be there : /
Common sense - a rarer commodity than ever : |

I know the Marines drafted during Vietnam, did not know the Navy used the draft also. From my perspective in the army at that time, most of the draftees entered the Army and were duly christened with a service number beginning with “US”. Interestingly, the day of my induction there were about 300 in our processing unit of which about 27 were enlistees. The remainder were separated away and then every third person was advised they were on their way to Paris Island.
I was just a kid, and was not absolutely sure if they were speaking from personal experience, or as a general concept, so I went looking online and found this. FWIW it is from WikiAnswers/Answers.com but I do think it validates their thoughts, since it would seem that there were were a LOT of folks wanting to get into the Navy, and the other branches mentioned - NOT because they wanted to serve, but because they did NOT want to go to Vietnam, and they hoped to stay stateside : /
“”The USN drafted men during WWII; during the Vietnam War “draft induced volunteers” joined the USN, USAF, and USCG, there was a waiting list to enlist into these services...all men preferring to avoid USA or USMC service instead.
IF not enough men entered into the USN, USAF, etc. they could’ve easily drew men from the ranks of the inductees. But this was not necessary for the Viet War; as mentioned before...there was a waiting list to enter those services.””
Prayers for Japan.
