HONOLULU (AP) — A 4.5-magnitude earthquake has struck Hawaii as residents brace for a tsunami after a massive earthquake in Japan.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damages from the quake that hit the Big Island about 30 miles southeast of Hilo just before 11 p.m. Thursday. The first waves from the tsunami were expected to hit about 3 a.m. Friday.

My son is at Schoefield Barracks with the 25th ID. He’s there with his wife and twin sons (and, she’s pregnant). He was awaken shortly after the earthquake, and went shopping for supplies. I would surmise that the Army would be called in to help in any disaster due to the tsunami.

Aloha Allegra!

Just got home and started half hearted unpacking after a sleepless night in my Jeep. We're ok on this side of the island but North and South Kona got a 10' surge that damaged some roads and establishments, thus still under the evacuation order.

Have to find out more details myself this afternoon since the local radio station has been playing reruns of the 0530 warning and evac order for the last couple hours.

Thanks for asking......and stay safe yourself!

Aloha Dave!

Meant to get back to you yesterday. Just to damn tired after spending the night in my Jeep.

Other than Kailua-Kona, seems that Crescent City and parts of Oregon got the worst damage from the tsunami that hit us and the mainland but that's less than minor compared to what happened in Japan.

We had plenty of early warning, they didn't.

Now after a night's sleep and access to news over the internet and some over cable news, the scope of the damage in Japan (outside of Tokyo) tremendous. The local radio news that was available while I was camped out was dismal, even to the point of recent updates on the situation that were four and five hours old.....reruns. Out going cell phone usage was discouraged, so I complied, but incoming calls from the mainland were ok and the best source of news for ten hours came from family calling to check on me. All in all, you were better informed than I was for a period of time.

Good to hear that you are okay.

Speaking of Crescent city, Fish Hawk sent me this You Tube link:

My family got their boats out in time and have moved them 80 miles to the south, in Humboldt Bay. Will keep them there until Crescent City can rebuild their docking systems. That one man that was washed out to sea was from my family property at the Mouth of the Klamath River. Don't know him, his name was Weber.

I was at Schofield '82-'85. The Division helped with the clean-up after Hurricane Iwa in '82. One soldier was killed during the clean-up operation.

One advantage to Schofield Barracks in the event of a massive Tsunami is it's elevation. It would take a thousand meter wave to flood the Quads.

Good new re your family and their boats. Were they able to get out when the first warning was sounded or were they out fishing?

More good news. Here on Maui the Maalaea Boat harbor was hit really hard. I have friends in the boat business here that need to get their charters out every day but the tsunami closed the harbor. My friends all got their boats out ahead of time but the tsunami sunk boats and tore up docks and pretty much ruined the docking areas so the state would not let any of the boats back into the harbor to their slips. My friend was afraid they would keep the harbor closed for at the least a few weeks or possibly a month or two which would just about break some of them. BUT!! today they cut through all the political bullcrap red tape and did a quick clean up, brought in heavy equipment and pulled out about three sunken boats and opened the harbor. Unheard of in this bureaucratic liberal Democrat run state. Can't stand our hippie Gov. Abercrombie but as much as I hate to, I take my hat off to him today. He vowed to get things going as soon as possible and came through. (man I hate to say that)LOL
