A Very Modest Victory in Madison
National Review ^ | March 10, 2011 | Editors

........And they all will receive something of value: a regularly scheduled vote about whether to be represented by their unions, ....And that is the real source of the rage on the left: Mandatory union representation, empowered by mandatory collective bargaining and mandatory dues deductions enforced by the state, creates an enormous flow of cash for Democratic political candidates and their pet causes. From 1989 to the present, five of the ten biggest donors to American political campaigns have been labor unions, including public-sector unions such as the National Education Association and the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees. The overwhelming majority of those donations go to Democrats. The union bosses and their Democratic patrons know that giving workers more of a choice about union representation will diminish that power and reduce that cash flow. That is what this is about, for all of the cheap talk about “civil rights” — as though federal employees in Washington were being treated like second-class citizens because their unions do not enjoy the same princely powers until now wielded by Wisconsin’s.

This is not the end of Wisconsin’s fiscal troubles, only the beginning of a solution. Other states, counties, and cities, many of them in far worse economic condition than Wisconsin, face similar difficult choices in their futures, and no doubt will endure similar political convulsions, if not more severe ones. The pure-hearted idealists on the left will not give in easily — not when there is a great deal of money at stake, along with raw political power and comfortable sinecures for those at the top of the public-sector foodchain. While we celebrate what has been won in Wisconsin, we must be mindful of the much more difficult work that remains to be done.

Screeching non-producing leftist leeches. I thank God for letting me live in a right-to-work state.

You’re more inclined to live within in your means in a right to work state.

You can adapt and make corrections in local and state budgets.

You aren’t held hostage by the employees.

You try to keep everyone employed, because you want to, and because you have the options and the freedom to shift things around.

Oops. Forgot an important point.

You aren’t bled dry by the union machine that that feeds taxpayer’s money to their socialist masters.

The victory itself may seem modest, but the precedent is massive - that pressure from the union goon machine can be withstood, that the media cannot spin the issue so hard and shamelessly that the GOP didn’t cave, and that the clear double-standard remained clear enough for a large enough segment of the population that polling support for the needed changes was maintained.

I think that storming the Capitol building and climbing through the windows gave the country the opportunity to see what looters look like.

The money quote:

“Mandatory union representation, empowered by mandatory collective bargaining and mandatory dues deductions enforced by the state, creates an enormous flow of cash for Democratic political candidates and their pet causes.”

You can bet the commies are demanding that king obuma do something. The commie unions and their democrat masters suffered major defeats in a several other states while attention was focused on Wisconsin.

The big news story of the 2010 elections was that more than 700 patriots were elected to various state legislatures, resulting in complete control of 26 states. This is where our political power lies to take back the country. These legislatures can start 1,000 brushfires. The criminal fascist syndicate occupying Washington has neither the manpower nor resources to extinguish them.

Time to get the axes out and add more fuel.

The next step is to take back our neighborhoods from the fascists infesting local village councils and county boards.

Name the movie.

The first step was taken in Madison, Wisconsin, my old home town.

I never really thought about it much before, until all of this came up, but public employee unions are simply morally and ethically illegitimate. Even a die-hard socialist like FDR said as much, when he pointed out that it is the people who are the employer, not the government, and it is not possible to collectively bargain with the whole of the people.

In addition to the fundamental illegitimacy, public employee unions lead to massive conflicts of interest between those unions and elected or appointed officials who are lobbied by those unions.

Therefore, I am wholly behind any proposal to disband any and all public employee unions and to make the formation of a public employee union illegal at all levels of government. This would not have any effect on unionization in the private sector.

Sadly, I don’t think it will have a negative effect. Already indications that Walker is in trouble, yet no news of backlash against the mob.

I live in Wisconsin. Don't swallow the myth that Walker is in trouble. Just because there were tons of people protesting in Madison does not mean that this is how the state as a whole feels.

Once the dust settles, Walker has plenty of time to make sure everyone understands what the hubub was REALLY all about: Freedom of public employess to choose

Hope you’re right, b/c if this goes poorly for the Republicans and Walker, the nation is doomed. I’m haunted by what happened to Winston Churchill after saving Great Britain. Tossed out like yesterday’s garbage in favor of a welfare state.
