Peace Corps Gang Rape: Volunteer Says U.S. Agency Ignored Warnings

More than 1,000 young American women have been raped or sexually assaulted in the last decade while serving as Peace Corps volunteers in foreign countries, an ABC News 20/20 investigation has found. In some cases, victims say, the Peace Corps has ignored safety concerns and later tried to blame the women who were raped for bringing on the attacks.

If you want to go serve others overseas, I think you would be better off going with a private charity, not The Peace Corps, which appears to be more concerned over its political goals and public image, rather than its volunteers. Be careful!

I’ve met one Peace Corps veteran. She did not seem traumatized by the experience but was a bit dispirited. She talked about corruption in the country she was sent to assist.

This is horrendous. If there’s been a thousand in a decade, that’s a hundred a year, and over eight women a month being raped in the (supposed) Peace Corps. This whole thing should be seriously overhauled, yesterday.

Raped is way better than raped and murdered. Or murdered and raped.

What ever.

As if know nothing, technological ignorant, unable to PVC glue liberal women offered anything but soft, limp condescensension.

Kum-by-ah, me Lord, kum-by-aj..

I would also be a bit leery of attempting to apply American leftie style multi-culturalism in countries that believe no such thing.

American women (and girls) may think it perfectly ok to walk around in nothing but a bikini. They will find, however, that in many countries that really is an invitiation to being raped. Not all males on the planet are as “enlightened” as our American metro-sexuals (and by “enlightened”, I mean “neutered”).

When we talk about budget cuts one of the first agencies to go should be the Peace Corps. It is more of a feel good agency for Peace Corps employees and the benefits it delivers to the third world are miniscule when conpared to the cost. No other advanced country has a Peace Corps. Time to get rid of this public relations relic. And the domestic version, Vista, should also be dumped for the same reasons.

I don’t know - my impression was that it was mostly women who volunteered.

1,000 haven’t been raped. If you read the article, 700 some-odd of them were groped, kissed, etc. The press likes to categorize any unwanted male attention as a sexual assault. By lumping all these actions together, they trivialize rape. I have a friend who is a missionary doctor in southwest Asia. She is careful in how she dresses and where she goes.

I knew a gorgeous liberal blonde who worked with the PC in the Central African Republic:

Her place had no running water; it was common for men to bath in a nearby watering place at one time, and the women at another:

Every morning there were male villager lookouts, and as she was walking to the appointed place shortly before the proper time, the men would call out to one another for the impending show to begin.

They —the men she was there in the village to purportedly help— would then openly wait and watch for her to disrobe, taking no effort at all to be subtle about it.

As she bathed they would masterbate, and call out for her to behold the point of their maximum satisfaction. Later they would be quite bothered and put out if, in the later course of helping them she asked them about it. It was like they believed that was part of her job.

The women, meanwhile, saw her wanker popularity and hated for for it.

WHAT A TERMINALLY SCREWED UP PLACE.

According to their website they currently have 8,655 volunteers. Women make up 60% of their volunteers.

If my math is correct women have a 2% chance of being raped during their year of volunteering.

Judges Gone Wild pointed out above that all the things counted as sexual assault weren’t rape, and that it was more like 700 than 1000, according to the article. So, it’s still pretty bad: slightly less than 2% are raped or otherwise sexually assaulted during a year’s volunteering.

Currently there are 8,655 volunteers in the Peace Corps. Of those, 60% are female (5,193). Of those, 7% are over 50 (remaining (4,829).

Minimum length of job (training + overseas) - 27 months. Average length of job - 33 months. New female volunteers per year - 1,756. Volunteers raped - 100 per year. Chance of female volunteer being raped - 5,694 per 100,000.
