WGBH(PBS) gets static over executives’ pay, ‘Taj Mahal’
Boston Herald ^ | March 10, 2011 | Jessica Heslam

More than a dozen WGBH honchos at PBS’ taxpayer-subsidized flagship station are raking in upwards of $200,000 a year while toiling in the lap of a luxurious $85 million multimedia palace dubbed the “Taj Mahal” that boasts a 200-seat amphitheater, state-of-the-art recording studio and Hamburg-Steinway grand piano.

The Herald’s review of the nonprofit producer behind such PBS stalwarts as “Frontline” and “Nova” comes on the heels of yesterday’s sudden ouster of National Public Radio’s boss following a viral video that showed another NPR executive calling Tea Party Republicans racist. The furor is fueling a new push to end taxpayer subsidies for public television and radio.

Over the past decade, the CPB has doled out more than $95 million to WGBH, which includes Springfield TV station WGBY and WGBH-FM. WGBH received $11.5 million in federal money this year— about 8 percent of its $156 million operating budget.

“If they were to do without the 10 percent or so of their budget that comes from federal taxpayers, with a little bit of belt-tightening, they could still be successful,” U.S. Rep. Doug Lamborn (R-Colorado) told the Herald. “We know that they can survive on their own. It’s time to push Big Bird out of the nest and let him fly on his own.”

I guess Mr Keaton on Family Ties was doing far better than we all thought.

Why sure, the magnaminity of their supporters would surely be stimulated by this knowledge. OTOH, maybe they would figure, as good little commies, that since it was no longer the official gubmit network, forget 'em.

Won't you please give? Even just a dollar will help fund your local PBS station for two years.

Just look at the happy faces of the lower-level staffers employed at our PBS affiliate in Washington D.C. Your small donation helped them to enjoy this past year's Winter Festival of Giving party.

He was in Columbus, though, and believe me, WOSU is decidedly low rent compared to WGBH.

To this day, “Family Ties” is the only prime time TV show set in Columbus.

Don’t demagogue on salaries, quit swatting at flies and just cut out all partisan tax exempt/non-profits immediately.
The RINOs just love to run in front of the microphones and whine! Just get busy and cut, cut, cut. That is why the idiot Repubs have a majority in the House! GET TO WORK!

Cut!Cut!Cut! Thats the word for the Day! For these times!

There should be retrobutions to the taxpayers!

Now we are asking, which came first, the chicken or the government? Cut! Cut! Cut!

Just my opinion.

Out of all of the stations or entities that PBS cuts might affect, I think pulling the rug from WGBH is very sad.

Nova has been one of the most watched, most well produced, and most scientifically accurate shows now for like forever.

Nature is also outstanding in just about every respect.

Austin City Limits always highlights talent that you would be very hard pressed to see in the mainstream fold. I remember seeing Eliza Gilkyson on and she was truly inspiring, a fantastic talent as a songwriter and performer.

So, like I said, just my opinion. WGBH has done a tremendous amount of very fine programming.

Then they should have no difficulty getting advertisers for their programs.

We don’t live in the Jacques Cousteau, Apollo 12 world anymore.

We live in a Miley Cyrus, Charlie Sheen Twitter world.

Sad.

The New Normal for CPB/NPR/NEA....etc. is PROVE IT!...cut off the public teat and see if you and others will support these ‘great’ CPB programs w/o docking every taxpayer. IOW you pay for it and let’s see if the programs are able to justify their existence!

I just think WGBH has proven itself, year after year, to be just about the best of the best.

You know, we’re not supposed to throw out the baby with the bathwater, that sort of thing.

If there is anyone who knows how to do fine PBS programming, it is WGBH.

We also live in an age where cable channels with a very small market share survive.

djf that isn’t really the point. I like Nova, I really do, and some of the other programming as well.

But there is NO reason, none, zero, zilch, nada, that one single penny of our taxpayer money (which SHOULD be used to prop up public unions...er...no...wait...) should be used to fund anything at all with public television or radio.

That is the point. And I think it is an all or nothing situation.

Well the point you seem to have missed is simple here it is in BIG letters: IF PBS PROGRAMS ARE SO DANG GOOD then supporters will prioritize PBS by devoting their OWN $$$/time/energy to NOVA, etc., etc.
IOWs, I love to sail and I do not expect you to contribute to my love of sailing but you think it is just dandy for you to want the Federal Government to tax but really it is to steal other people’s money to support your love of PBS.
Get.a.clue.
