“Whatever you think of Reagan — once the building’s gone, it’s gone forever,” he added.

Indeed. No matter a president's stripes, this country likes to preserve the homes of its leaders.

Absolutely. For example, I would be all for preserving Obama's birth home, which is located at 1026 Turkana Street, Nakuru, Kenya.

Why would you what to tear down a cool looking building like that. I hope they can save it through some pressure. Do you think they would tear down the hut Obummer grew up at in Kenya?

If the Republic lives for a 1000 years, how many stupid boyhood homes of Presidents are we going to have?

Presidents are not gods, they are not Royalty. Get rid of all that tom foolery and save some money.

When the University of Chicago gets around to disclosing their plans for this house, maybe they could also disclose how a vacancy on their faculty was suddenly foundcreated for a graduate fresh out of Harvard Law School.

The historical significance aside, I'd hate to see a structure with so much character torn down in favor of yet another stark, sterile, ugly monolith.

Architects need to strike a balance between aesthetics and utility. Most of what they build now looks like crap even when brand new.

Thanks for posting that photo. I could not capture the “properties” in a postable form. I agree that it is a cool looking building. Apparently the interior was nice enough that the current owner stole the fireplace mantel for his own house. LOL

Solution is simple. Claim that the place was also home to America’s first Illegal Alien, first homosexual couple or first Marxist professor etc.

I like the way you think. Dig a couple of blind tunnels in the basement and call it the destination of the Underground Rail Road!

no doubt the University has this scoped out as the new location for Bill Ayers’ office...

Reagan was born in Tampico, Il, lived in Galesburg for a time (went to grade school there) and also in Dixon, Il. I wonder how many places he’s lived that’ll become an historic place.

Though Reagan — born 100 years ago Sunday — spent just a year at the home as a 3-to-4 year-old from 1914 to 1915 and most of his youth in western Illinois, he wrote fondly of the gas-lit first-floor apartment at 832 E. 57th St.

The fact that this house was far from being Reagan’s most important home should be saying something. I would argue to just keep his ranch up and honestly let this Illinois home go.

Re: above post. My daughter teaches music (K-8) (private school in the South) and introduced Music Theory and History to her 7th & 8th graders this year. Her final assignment for the grading period was for the 8th grade classes to write a paper describing 3 musical styles and explain how they evolved. One of her students chose “Jazz” and explained that it originated in “Chicago where slaves devloped the style while picking cotton during the 1920s and 1930s.” She was grading papers at my house and after we both stopped laughing, she gave him a “D”. The kids who copied their papers directly from Wikipedia without attribution got “F”s. When are kids going to learn that teacher has a computer too?

Now, the little-known childhood home of Ronald Reagan in Hyde Park could soon be torn down by the University of Chicago, which has quietly plotted its demolition, the Sun-Times has learned.

I'm sure the university will be thrilled to tear down his house. A university should have some sense of history, regardless of their politics.

The fact that Ronaldus Magnus lived there is all the more reason to knock it down to liberal academics.

Why would you what to tear down a cool looking building like that.

The answer, as the article says, is to expand a hospital campus. And while it is cool looking I have to tell you that, architecturally, it's just not that special in Chicago. There are literally thousands of buildings like that.

There are literally thousands of buildings like that.

But this one is connected to the most popular president living or dead. Obummers Rezko bought mansion is pretty generic. Do you think the wrecking ball will ever head over there? Where has any monument like this ever been razed in recent history?

The answer, as the article says, is to expand a hospital campus.

I read the article too. Who cares what it is for. There are ways to save the building instead of removing it. The Citigroup Building is an example..
