Interesting article which deals with an issue I’m struggling with right now.

Do I build a sweet AR15 or do I just go out and buy an Armalite AR10 or a Panther .308?

Any thoughts?

You have to ask yourself what's the most likely scenario you'll be facing? If you're looking at SHTF type stuff beyond 600 yards, well the decision is pretty much made.

If you think that isn't very likely given your location, situation, etc. then the Mforgery may be the way to go. Do a "needs analysis" before you buy anything, then select the weapon that fulfills most or all of those needs.

Get the AR.
Cheaper to shoot (train) and more useful for likely applications. Everybody dreams about the 1000m shot because they don’t want to think about the 100m “up close” fight.

I built a sweet AR15 with 2 uppers,.223 and 7.62x39. I prefer the 7.62x39 which works well with C-Products magazines.

The 7.62 payed for itself in reduced ammo cost.

So other than the odd 500 yards shot, I would build the AR15 lower with multiple uppers for the same price as an AR 10 plus ammo.

Where are expected engagement ranges for your use of the weapon?

This depends AR15 for CQB and built up areas is a good choice. Ammo is lighter and length is short for confined spaces.

AR10 is Closer to Stoners original design, better build quality less mass produced. Longer weapon, longer range, bigger bullet more damage more ability to overcome cover.

If you live in very urban areas with limited distant shots then AR15.

If you live in rural area with long sightlines go AR10

If you can only have one gun, prefer the .308. Otherwise, have both.

And speaking as one who has built many AR 15s, do not entrust your life to a homebuild. There are too many variables, and flawless performance on the range does not guarantee that the gun won't fail in a SHTF situation where you are gunning and running and feeding it all kinds of crap ammo and mud and dirt. I love ARs, but I keep a bone stock Chinese AK around for the Zombie War.

I bought an M1A from Springfield Armory (National Match model) back in 1998 and sent it to ROBAR to be sniper tuned with a list of suggestions given to me by a buddy of mine who was a SEAL sniper at the time. I still have it and I can still cover a 3 shot group at 100 meters with a dime. A good scope helps, too. If you're going to stick with the 5.56mm load then sure an AR15 is a great platform, but for heavier chores go to the M14 frame.
