NPR CEO: ‘We Get a Tremendous Amount of Criticism for Being Too Conservative'
CNS News ^ | March 08, 2011 | Nicholas Ballasy

(CNSNews.com) - National Public Radio President and CEO Vivian Schiller said Monday that NPR gets a “tremendous amount of criticism for being too conservative.”

At a luncheon at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., Schiller was asked by a moderator: “Do you believe there’s an imbalance at NPR in terms of liberals and conservatives in the newsroom--I think I know which side they’d like to have better represented there--if the answer is yes, what do you propose to do about it?”

Schiller said, “You know, every news organization--I’ve worked now with three news organizations, but even every other, people I know from every other news organization I know--gets criticized about being too liberal, about being too conservative, about being too this, that and the other. It comes with the territory.

“So, certainly we do get criticized about all manner of things,” said Schiller. “In terms of the liberal, and I will tell you that it maybe doesn’t get as much attention, but we get a tremendous amount of criticism for being too conservative as well. I wish that those folks could be in our editorial meetings and see what goes on and the care that our reporters and our journalists and other editors take to get it right.

“This is an incredibly crucial cornerstone of what we do to present, not journalism that is ‘on the one hand, on the other hand’--that’s not very interesting story-telling,” she said. “But journalism that reflects no particular bias. And it’s not just a matter of how the stories are told, it’s the kind of stories that we tell on NPR.”

She continued, “For those that do criticize us for being liberal, I ask them, when I get that personally, I ask them to point to specific stories. And when they do, we take those very seriously. Have we erred? Absolutely, we have erred in the past, but we make corrections, and we always strive to do better.”

Well, Vivian. . .how about this. . REGARDLESS of whether it's left OR right. . .DEFUND public radio! NOW!

But, just for the record. . .it's not about being criticized for Left or Right bias. . it's about the number of registered Democrats in your shop running things. As it is in most media operations, upwards to 80% to 90% of all on-air reporters, newspaper journalists, production and editorial content people in the media are registered Democrats. That fact manifests in most media coverage.

Is this MRS RON SCHILLER?????

he of the muslim money payola grab exposed by James o’Keefe?

If so, isn’t “NPR”, taxpayer funded media, due for crtical review of its incestuous hiring? What a viper nest of progressive nepotism. DISGUSTING.

How much taxpayer loot did the Schiller clan collect from “NPR”. collectively?

Good. That’s all the more reason to defund NPR. They will have more of a rebel image if they don’t get a subsidy.

I don’t care whether NPR or this witch is liberal or conservative. I just don’t want to be taxed.

The same democrat 'war room' types who send out fake letters to newspapers, recruit fake callers to conservative talk radio, ALSO send letters to 'journalists' with this kind of pap. These letters provide cover for liberal elites to delude themselves into thinking their 'fair'.

Then again, it's better than the hate letters they send out from 'life long Republicans'...

This argument is what liberal publications always use, so it must be the best they've got. Pretty lame. There are rational ways to determine bias, if they actually cared, but they don't.

Complete hooey>>>>>>>

Not hooey. Plenty of lefties are nuts enough to think NPR tilt’s conservative. If so then these lefties shouldn’t mind if tax money to NPR is cut off

"There! That's a gratuitous slam against President Bush!

So True! I remember when klinton was a pres. every mention of him was a reverential "PRESIDENT CLINTON" (no doubt with bows, scrapes, and kowtows)

President Bush was just "BUSH".

National Pubic Radio deserves death without a funeral.

I can see that. Do you know anyone who isn’t ultra-liberal who listens to NPR? I don’t.

This is as likely as Rush Limbaugh getting letters saying he's too liberal.

It's as likely as the KKK getting letters saying they're too open minded.

Some REAL journalists needs to take a long hard look at some of these letters.

Here's a hint: Not everyone who's registered as a Republican is one. Some people cheat. They sign-up to provide cover for a series of dirty tricks.

Exactly. She's spewing pure B.S. If the liberals actual thought NPR was conservative, they would be trying to defund it. The liberals can't even stand to have private individuals with private money express a conservative point of view. If any liberal actual expresses the notion that NPR is too conservative (as opposed to her lying about it), it is to make NPR seem more central so as to keep the public fundiing.

I listen to NPR regularly, purely for amusement. I have no exposure to network TV, and so NPR is the principal way I hear the Liberal point of view. I am always dumbfounded that they (appear to) think that they are unbiased. They are in fact, hate-mongers toward all things right, and idolizers of all things left. Utterly blatant. But they just say “Who? Us? No, we’re very fair.”
