A 47-year-old San Jose man was severely injured Friday night when a group of nine to 15 people robbed and attacked him at the Redwood City Caltrain station, authorities said.
Late Saturday, the man remained hospitalized in critical condition, said Caltrain spokeswoman Christine Dunn.
She said the man was waiting for a southbound train when he was attacked about 7:30 p.m. and then left on the ground at the station. The assailants fled before police arrived.
"This is a very unusual situation," Dunn said. "We have almost 40,000 riders a day who have every reason to feel safe while riding Caltrain."
Dunn said the station near downtown Redwood City is adjacent to a shopping center and is also a major bus transit point served by SamTrans buses. "So there is a lot of foot traffic in the station coming and going at all times of the day," she said. "At 7:30, there would be people around."
Dunn said some Caltrain stations have surveillance cameras, but she did not know whether the Redwood City station has any such equipment.
There was no description of any of the assailants, but San Mateo County Transit Police investigators are following leads, including reports of a white compact car seen leaving the scene, she said.
Caltrain officials say they have beefed up security at the Redwood City station.
Anyone who may have witnessed the assault may contact detective Victor Lopez of the San Mateo County Transit Police at (650) 622-8048.

It doesn’t sound like muzzies. With those numbers, it does sound like a racial crime. Most likely, black on white. Second most likely, Hispanic on white.
Barnum served two terms in the Connecticut legislature in 1865 as a Republican for Fairfield.
With the ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution over slavery and African-American suffrage, Barnum spoke before the legislature and said, "A human soul is not to be trifled with. It may inhabit the body of a Chinaman, a Turk, an Arab or a Hotentot - it is still an immortal spirit!"
Gave me new insight....and admiration for the man!
FWIW
It must be a TARDIS, because no normal white compact car can house 9-15 people (none of whom apparently possessed a single distinguishing physical characteristic).
“...white compact car seen leaving the scene.”
It must have been a clown car to hold up to 15 attackers.
This is exactly why high capacity magazines MUST be in the hands of good citizens.
They're members of the group Eric Holder reference as 'My People.'
California is bankrupt. The idiots who voted for this are going to see their handiwork when you see a lot more of this plus riots, mass murder on the streets, beatings, rapes, robbery, anarchy, famine, disease, etc etc.
People have no clue how fast things will break down.
Keep watching TV like sheep folks. ALL TV supports and protects you know who. Fox is no better.
Not necessarily on white. I can see a mob like this attacking anyone they percieve as weaker. In fact there are a large number of asians in the area.
Well then, with 9 to 15 attackers, that settles it: clowns. Only clowns wil lfit 9-15 in a small compact car. So it was clowns gone wild.
You are going to be seiing a LOT more of this. Calif is so screwed along with IL and a few other states.
Paging Bernard Goetz.
Ok, here’s a Redwood City anecdote from about 20 years ago.
I was in downtown RC and was at an intersection that was near the high screwl. A group of about 10-12 hispanic students on foot were also waiting at the light. The thing was, they were waiting for the light to change against them so they could cross in front of traffic and hold everyone up.
There was lots of honking by motorists and bird-flipping by the students (all of them Dean’s list candidates, I’m sure).
I used to take Caltrain everyday to work for 6 years and sometimes had to switch trains at Redwood City. Busy station, but I always saw a fair number of sketchy people getting on or off the train there.
Are we sure it wasn’t two white guys in a white van? /moose
East Palo Alto (home of Mother’s Day, i.e., the day the welfare checks come in) is right next door.
As a side-note, they are building a PT Barnum Museum in Bridgeport CT—sadly one of the crappiest cities in our state.
Not in Texas, thank goodness.
That’s true E.PA is nearby, but if I was forced to guess, I’d say a Mexican gang or group of hoodlum wanna-bes. Lots of illegals in Redwood City, at least when I was living in the area till 06.
On a serious note - Redwood City is a very nice area. Scary that this happened there. I used to take the train to PacBell Park by myself and never felt uncomfortable. However, I never took it from the station closest to my house as it was dark and scary. I used to go one station south to San Bruno. More people and better lighting.
