Gallup says that not having a clear presidential front-runner in the Republican party is historically abnormal:
The wide-open battle for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination with nearly a three-way tie among Mike Huckabee, Sarah Palin, and Mitt Romney is quite different from the typical pattern observed in past Republican nomination contests. In Gallup polling since 1952, Republican Party nomination races always featured a clear front-runner at this stage of the campaign, and in almost all cases, that front-runner ultimately won the nomination.

There is no Presidential front runner because no one has declared he or she is running for President!
Our problem is that the GOP nominating process is essentially unchanged from the one that foisted McLame upon us. Frontloaded with early votes in big open primary states. Sure to yield the very sort of candidates we would not like.
After the debacle of 2000 I had hoped that both parties would re-think elections and put some reforms in place. Bush almost lost the presidency because of Dem malfeasance. With a little ju-jitsu, the GOP might have backed the Dems into a corner on this, to ensure that "no future election would be stolen again". It could have worked and been a good thing. But I don't think either party really wants things to change.
If Palin can overcome the odds and triumph over the current bad system, I would hope that as president she would really push for better elections: Voter ID, no open primaries, etc. She knows a rotten system when she sees one.
The sole purpose of the Republican Party is to serve as an ineffective alternative to the Democrat Party.
Nobody has even announced yet, have they...
Wasn't Reagan arguing politics when he was representing GE instead of just being a celebrity front man for GE?
Shouldn’t that be a -17 in 2008 (and an exception to the rule?)
I guess I misread it. It says “Front-runner lead,” not “eventual nominee lead.”
I don’t like the table though. Somehow it should indicate the exceptions to the rule (such being 1964 and 2008, out of 9 tries).
And who knows we might both right.
