Saving money by double counting

How can Obamacare save money for Medicare? Easy. Double count; apply the same savings to both organizations. Apparently that's what Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius did.

Speaking at session of the House Energy and Commerce Health Subcommittee, Rep John Shimkus (R-IL) asked her

"There is an issue here on the budget because your own actuary has said you can't double-count," said Shimkus. "You can't count - they're attacking Medicare on the CR when their bill, your law, cut $500 billion from Medicare."

He continued: "Then you're also using the same $500 billion to what? Say your funding health care. Your own actuary says you can't do both. [...] What's the $500 billion in cuts for? Preserving Medicare or funding the health-care law?"

Sebelius' reply? "Both."

Well, at least she was honest.

"I was shocked to hear the secretary admit that $500 billion is double-counted in the health-care law," said Shimkus after Thursday's hearing. "We knew the health-care law's actual cost was much greater than originally told to the public. And now, the truth is slowly coming out in administration reports and testimony."

Rep. Joe Pitts of Pennsylvania , the chairman of the subcommittee added, "The same dollar can't be used twice. This is the largest of the many budget gimmicks Democrats used to claim Obamacare would reduce the deficit."

Shocked? Rep Shimkus, that's the Chicago Way.

Anybody else here get annoyed by Fox News “contributors” like O’Reilly, Krauthammer, and even Baier who insult our intelligence calling discussion of simple arithmetical calculations such as what the article points out as “going into the weeds,” “boring to the public,” “confusing to the folks,” etc.?

fox is now controlled tightly, just like cnn and the rest. fox is not your friend... my friend... or America's friend and they are growing more leftist every day. I stopped watching them... I despise almost everyone there... only a small few left working there still have integrity... Palin is one of those that does.

I'm sure she'll just say she meant that she's preserving Medicare by funding Obama care unless the actual discussion was a lot more specific. His questioning from this snip is almost incomprehensible, and the editing is worse. "Say your (sic) funding health care. Your own" I guess it's supposed to be "You're?"

I don’t think what I mentioned has anything to do with ideology. It is just a simple lack of respect for the audience.

No, I don’t.

It has nothing to do with party or ideology-—it has to do with disrespect for the audience’s intelligence.

Rand Paul has proposed $500 billion in cuts. That is not boring. A start, maybe, but not boring.

Meanwhile, all the dither is about 1.5% of the projected deficit. We need whole departments to disapear; starting with Energy and Education.

Congressman Shimkus, you are just realizing this now? Then you are shocked?

And you did not call for the Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to resign?

I agree with you-—that’s exactly the sort of thing we should hear about on the news, in detail.

But our “buddies” on Fox don’t seem to think we are capable of handling it. Our “eyes will glaze over,” they like to say.

The socialist/populist O'Reilly has been my personal target for almost two years now. I try expose him at every turn. I consider him an enemy of the Republic because of his wide viewership.

A perpetual parade of radicals, communists, socialists, liberals, propagandizing academics and insidious Islamists are invited by him to be on his show. They dress up stylishly and clean their fingernails to appear average to the public. O'Reilly gives them cachet and publicity for their nefarious anti-American and anti-capitalist causes and agendas....and they become well-known through him and make big bucks on the creamed-chicken circuit.

I don't see such a lineup appearing every night on Greta's show. I hope she can resist any pressure from her bosses to change the nature of her guest lists.

The Bloviator's "fair and balanced" is weighted in favor of the enemy and has been for some time now.

Behind O'Reilly's winsome leprechaun smile and charming facade is a disgusting, weak-spined American with jello principles.

He's the last person in the world I'd want backing me up in a foxhole.

In fact, he IS a Foxhole.

The regime is populated by arch criminals. Once the demoncrats lose the ability to lie, which they seemingly never will, their party is over.

The one who gets me is that blonde bimbo from Oxidental College in LA-—what a commie airhead! She embarasses herself every time she opens her mouth yet B.O’R. seems to think she adds something to the show, as does Cavuto.

Waaaay too much leftism going on over there! I wish we could get somebody to start a REAL conservative network!

(And whoever would have thought that ex-CNN Greta would be the most “fair and balanced” host on FNN?)

I think you have to take spokesmen like Krauthammer issue by issue.

The important thing is never to forget who he writes for. The WaPost, a liberal rag at best.,p> Krauthammer is a lot like Newt. About 70-80% of what he says is right on and usually well stated. It's that other 1/4 that makes us all crazy.

We just need to keep whacking our friends and family over the head with the facts. They will probably never hear the truth from anyone else.

I'm glad many of us here get it.

When your government takes in 200 million per month and spends 300 million per month even 500 billion only covers five months. But,it is a good start.

Its easy to turn the dial and watch something else. It's a lot harder to remind FNC who gave them their start, their huge ratings lead and who supported them for many years.

I say hammer their ass. They will come around. They always do.

FNC is no different from the RINOS. Rather than kick them out just make them sit at the back of the bus.
