ORANGE — A dozen Town Hall clerical and custodial employees won the right to get coffee and milk paid for by taxpayers, and the town must reinstate dress-down Fridays, officials said this week.

Recently, the Connecticut State Board of Labor Relations sided with United Public Service Employees Union Local 424-Unit 21, saying the town violated the Municipal Employees Relations Act by retaliating against the union for attending and making certain comments at a Jan. 26, 2009, Board of Finance meeting.

seems like retaliation to me - they spent a lot more on legal fees than on the coffee. the manager had a hissy fit, and his actions cost the town, not the unions.

I live in the next town over from Orange, Milford.

Government employees are very petty.

This is what the public employees are concerned with? How about a little more concern for doing the job you were hired to do?

This, in a small town “nutshell”, explains what on a large scale is wrong with the relationship between civil servant unions and governments. Also why our governments are flat broke.

This is ridiculous.

At the last place I worked we had one of those food service coffee makers and we each brought in a couple cans of coffee each month if we drank it. I worked there for several years and the honor system wasn’t much of a problem. I liked it better than having it provided because I like dark roast and so I could get some while I was working because that’s what I brought in and I could try out different kinds.

Why can’t these people just bring their own?

They're making a very specific point. Do you realize what it is?

The ruling isn’t surprising. Connecticut is run by socialists/communists.

“I live in Naugatuck!”

I grew up in Naugatuck. Graduating Naughy High in ‘67 when the town smelled like burnt rubber and glue was the drug of choice. Them were the good old days.
