NY woman convicted of spying in '49 dies at 89

She was young and smart and claimed she was in love, and when Judith Coplon was accused of being a Soviet spy in 1949 she became a sensation.

A 28-year-old Justice Department employee, Coplon had been caught with secret U.S. documents at a meeting with a Russian agent on a Manhattan street. She claimed she was meeting him only because she loved him, but she was found guilty at two trials.

The convictions were overturned and the cases were eventually dropped. Coplon married one of her lawyers, raised four children in Brooklyn and became an educator and supporter of literacy.

She died Saturday at age 89 in a Manhattan hospital, her daughter, Emily Socolov, said Wednesday.

Americans had just begun hearing about Alger Hiss and Russian espionage when the FBI intercepted Soviet cables between KGB stations in Moscow and New York that made them believe that an agent code-named "Sima" was Coplon, who had won a citizenship award in high school.

"She had a job right there in the Justice Department, so it became a high priority for the FBI because this was someone in their own shop," said Cold War historian John Earl Haynes. "This was a time when there was something of a drought in terms of KGB sources, and it turned out she was one of their most productive agents."

I know it was left unsaid in the article, but is there any doubt that she and her kids are all Democrats?

Convictions overturned and the cases dropped.

But of course, it’s NY and some things never ever change.

Lynn Stewart didn’t even deny she carried terror messages for her imprisoned client and her first sentence was laughable.

Finally one honest judge threw the book at her. Hopefully, the skunk will die in prison.

The NSA had to withhold evidence because they didn’t want to reveal their sources. Happens a lot with Chinese spies too in the last two decades.

The government’s chief evidence against her was the Venona decrypts, which could not be revealed in court. Venona did not become public until the late 1970's.

You’re right. So, the mystery continues ~ now Bill Clinton becomes the “cover daddy” for a deep penetration by a super spy!

No Search Warrant before apprehension. Same problem we face today between criminal activity and terrorism.

I believe the Venona decrypts revealed some 300 Soviet agents(by code name) at least 150 of which were identified by actual name. Yet, I doubt even 10 of those individuals were ever prosecuted. That, supposedly represents some kind of “Red Scare”, witch hunt or anti-Communist hysteria; more than a hundred traitors and dedicated enemy agents are allowed to go free, live comfortable lives on government and university pensions and in the following years, continue their treachery by actively undermining our efforts in Vietnam.

The judge said it was obvious she was guilty but had to let her go because evidence was obtained illegally.

Her own daughter admits she did it.

The Venona cables also show she did it.
