Missing Wis. Dems now face $100 daily fines

The 14 Wisconsin state Senate Democrats who left the state two weeks ago now face fines of $100 for each day they stay away.

Republicans remaining in the Senate approved the daily fine today with none of the Democrats present.

The Democrats left Wisconsin in order to delay indefinitely a Republican-backed bill taking away collective bargaining rights from public employees.

The resolution also requires the missing Democrats to reimburse the Senate for any costs incurred during attempts to force them to return. Their salary and other per diem payments can be withheld until they pay back the penalties and costs.

Republicans have already withheld the checks of missing Democrats from direct deposit and denied access to copying machines for their staff.

Meanwhile, five Democratic state senators and four of their Republican colleagues are being targeted by recall attempts.

One hundred measly dollars? That's not even hooker-money to them.

It should have been a thousand.

These aren't Congresscritters; it may not bankrupt them, but some of them will feel it.

Union thugs will pick up the tab. Are these jackasses paying their Illinois expenses with gift cards (credit card type) given to them by the unions? That is how crooks sneak money around these days.

A step in the right direction. And they can be dismissed once it reaches 30 days away unexcused.

That’s not even enough. They probably get paid 3 times that much every day.

They should tally up all the additional costs plus interest for keeping the capitol building open to the protesters and divide that by 14. Voila......

From Wikipedia: Wisconsin Senate

"Senators elected or re-elected in the fall of 2008 will receive an annual salary of $49,943."

It doesn't say how they are paid (5 or 7 day work week) but if you took their salary and divided it by 365 days, they make $136.83 a day - so that $100 is actually significant - a little over 73% of their salary. (should be at least $136.83 IMHO but its a start)

Also, from the same page ...

"In addition to their salaries, senators outside Dane County may receive a per diem up to $88 to cover living expenses while they are in Dane County on state business. Members of the Madison delegation may receive a per diem up to $44 to cover expenses."

I'm not sure but I would like to think that since they are out of Dane County their per diem is also being withheld.
