(Reuters) - Oil rose to settle at its highest level ($102) since August 2008 on Wednesday after an airstrike near Libya’s oil infrastructure raised more fears the OPEC nation’s oil sector could become a target in embattled leader Muammar Gaddafi’s efforts to hold power.

News of the strike in Brega, about kilometers (1.2 miles) from a Libyan oil terminal, added to two weeks of fears the unrest could spill over into other large oil producers in the region.

Oil markets remained focused on the turmoil in the Middle East, which could signal another threat to global oil supplies after the Libyan revolt cut exports.

“It looks like an attack fairly close to what is one of Libya’s largest storage and export terminals,” said Andy Lebow, trader at MF Global in New York.

CARNEY AND ZIENTS (AND OBAMA) BRIEF — WATCH LIVE: President Obama is “aware of the impact the spike in oil prices can have on gasoline prices,” White House press secretary Jay Carney tells reporters.

“We remain confident that the global system has the capacity to deal with disruptions in the oil supply,” he adds. “In terms of who is in charge of this issue, clearly our NEC director, Gene Sperling, focuses on this very closely.” (1:45 p.m.)

Libyans don’t have the trained manpower nor the means militarily to get the job done in Tripoli...Already some are saying they were wrong to say International help not needed...second guessing after this last bombing of Gaddifi’s forces.

I do think Britain will have to pick up the pace and get people up close and personal now woth the protesters to take over Tripoli...

Understand even Canada sending military vessel to help.

Agree; Obama is cheering for even higher gas prices as long as he doesn't get blamed for. he will call for move money for clean energy - wind, solar, unicorn farts.

“We remain confident that the global system has the capacity to deal with disruptions in the oil supply,”

We told the Saudi's to pound sand when Egypt and Jordan were coming apart.

Why would they increase oil by 2mil/bbl per day to make up for a Libyan production loss?

I can't imagine that they would. Certainly I would not in their shoes.

This is all about shutting down this country. If they were serious about our oil supply, they would have been drilling by now.

It’s baffling because he will get blamed for it- the GOP needs to focus on educating the citizens and drop the damned talking points.

I’m still trying to figure out why some on the left want US to get our military involved on the ground in Libya. I heard one of them last night on BOR- she sounded like a regular hawk. She mostly made it into a humanitarian thing but at the end BOR asked if we should get involved in combat against Gaddafi and she said no....not yet.

WTH?!?!
