Why aren't Lackawanna windmills turning?
WIVB ^ | 3/1/2011 | George Richert

Have you noticed many of the new windmills along Route 5 are not working?

This isn't the first time they've had mechanical problems, and we managed to dig up some hard numbers on just how much electricity they actually are generating.

In its first year, Steelwinds had to replace all of the gear boxes in the eight turbines. The next year, the blades had to be fixed. And for this entire winter, only half of the Lackawanna windmills have been working at any given time.

Do you really think citing a heavily footnoted academic journal articles is necessary when mentioning the obvious fact that the things just can't take the stress and rarely function?

So you want to rely on "Jenn the blogger" for your technical info. Fine, but I prefer a more authoritative source for my technical information.

Dude, read your links. At least the ONE technical link that reviews the problems which are NOT as you got from "Jenn the blogger". It categorizes but does not analyze. Google is your friend!!!!!!!!!!

Check the names on the posts. I just pointed out that your hostility and denigration of the other poster's source was silly. I'm not relying on Jenn for anything and didn't user her as a source for anything.

I do rely on the word of electrical engineers I work with though. They tell me that windmills contribute absolutely nothing, even when they are functional, because spinning reserve always has to be on line for when the wind wanes, which it does all the time. The fuel needed to keep the spinning reserve generators going and turning them on and off all the time is as much or more than if they were just running full time. The windmills contribute nothing at all when they are apparently working. So arguments about gear box lube are beside the point any. All that really matters is that wind power is a joke and a scam.

I drive by a couple of huge wind farms in Oklahoma, I’ll typically see around 5% of them unmoving. That’s just a sample of that day, makes you wonder how often they are in disrepair.

These are fairly new wind mills BTW.

You are looking for something, there are many articles, blog posts, insurance underwriter reports etc.. talking about these and other problems

There are energy efficiency studies, , , , .............

I have no idea what you are looking for, so look it up yourself.

I showed you pictures which generally considered the best for blogs and discussion boards like the one that you are on.

I don’t know, but here is another link:

Machine Design magazine (a trade pub for engrs) has run several editorials pointing out the shortcomings of wind turbines.

There’s starting to be plenty of non-political criticism of windmills.

But they’re part of “crony capitalism” (GE, etc) so difficult to stop.

Take away the tax incentives and they’re junk... is that what you’re saying?

That is about correct. On a typical day, maintenance crews are lubing, testing and maintaining the farms. I live in western OK, apparently our farms are better maintained than most. Do people think you just stick these Bohemians up and they run forever?

Yea. Like comments on FR are some sort of court of law with you as the judge of what is acceptable evidence. Delusions of grandeur much?

They should hook these things up to a thorium reactor. That will get them spinning - night and day, windy or calm.

The technology has been around for awhile. The significant install activity started only when incentives and State mandates came about. So much for the invisible hand of the free market.
