Consumer Reports says GM Volt falls short on range

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - General Motors Co's mostly electric Chevy Volt turned in a lackluster performance for efficiency in its first series of road tests by product raters at Consumer Reports.

"We would have really liked to have loved it," David Champion, director of Consumer Reports auto test center told Reuters on Monday after announcing the organization's top picks for 2011.

"It was fun to drive and the ride quality was pretty good. But when you look at the finances, for us it doesn't make any sense," Champion said.

He said consumers seeking value and top fuel efficiency would be better off buying a top-performing gasoline/electric hybrid like the Toyota Motor Corp Prius or a Fusion by Ford Motor Corp.

Hybrids like Volt do better than pure electrics. Pure electrics stink at providing passenger heat (although if the designers were really serious, they would put heat pumps into the design, basically the A/C system working backwards).

Hybrids will probably always have a niche as curiosity cars and for die hard green hippies. I think Volkswagen should make a new Bug hybrid — they would probably sell well to the green, Birkenstocked, global-warmist set.

“The Toyota Prius is the best choice if you’re looking for a cheaper midsize hybrid”

Prius a Midsize car? I guess we can’t take anything this Fishwrap says seriously.

So, let’s see if I understand... if we all drive electric cars, the temperature will decrease, thereby reducing the efficiency of our electric cars...

The windmills used to recharge them won't be working either.

Every time some libtard’s electric clown car has an epic failure, a moonbat gets its wings burned off.

My old Plymouth used to go about a quarter mile on the starter, does that make it a hybrid?

Funny how temperature sensitive these electric cars are.

Yup. And once a gas engine warms up they run fine, delivering all the heat you want in the passenger compartment. The Volt driver has to choose between economy and comfort on cold days.

A few years ago we bought a used 2001 Civic with 60K miles for my husband’s commute. Not only does it keep going, and going, and going, it gets nearly 40mpg in the summer.

A friend has Prius and complains her mileage is terrible in the winter if she runs the heater. Hard not to do here in Michigan.

A silly hybrid, let alone an electric, probably wouldn’t have the torque to get out of our driveway in January.

re: “Volt was in the GM pipeline well before Baraq became POTUS”

Undoubtedly but without the government intrusion they probably wouldn’t have put it into production yet. The Volt’s primary purpose was to be the advertising centerpiece for the “new GM” and at that time none of the big boys cared whether it would ultimately be marketable. American people get screwed again because we paid for it.

Maybe it is a midsize car compared to some piece of junk like the so-called “smart” car.

I miss the GM and Chrysler of yesteryear, as union-ridden as they were. But as long as they are taxpayer basket charity cases, and have no pressure to come up with something really competitive, I can’t see shopping for anything new in those brand any more. Once every car they sell actually puts something back in the US treasury, then I’ll take a second look.

Exactly. The next President, and every Governor of every state should sign an order that except for emergency vehicles, every vehicle the government buys needs to get 10mpg better than the national average.

Only in ambient temps over 70. Look at CFL’s outdoors, the light they produce is considerably less than advertised.

I worked in Auto, knew folks working on the Project.
Only a Community Organizer would bring the Volt to Market, using a Daewoo and Opel platform.
