4.7 Earthquake Hits Near Greenbriar
UALR Public Radio - KUAR ^ | 02/28/2011 | Kelly MacNeil

Posted on 02/28/2011 6:49:19 AM PST by RobertClark

People across Arkansas felt the earth move at about 11:00 p.m. Sunday, as a roughly 4.7-magnitude earthquake struck near Greenbriar.

It's the biggest earthquake yet to hit the north-central part of the state, as part of what’s become known as the “Guy Swarm.”

The quake was felt as far away as Memphis, but at 1:00 a.m., no injuries had been reported. Scott Ausbrook with the U.S. Geological Survey says the state hasn’t seen a temblor of this size since 1976.

Geologists are still looking at whether the recent series of quakes could be related to the natural gas drilling in the Fayetteville Shale.

I initially thought what I heard was the approaching storms last night - a low rumbling, rolling sound preceded the shaking by about 2 to 3 seconds. Then the shaking began - it is by far the most pronounced and longest in duration since the earthquake swarm began several months ago. I am about 10 miles from the epicenter. It reminded me of sailing on the great lakes in a 24' snipe - you could literally feel the pasing waves of motion last night as they rippled under the house. Let's hope we don't wake up the New Madrid or this could get interesting real quick!

Why do we always jump to the conclusion that human activity is the cause of all change on this planet? We are so damn arrogant that we seem to forget the cycles of nature and how truly minuscule our infestation of this planet really is.

I find that rather amazing as well. I had to search to find a source that wasn't Gannett in order to post on FR. All of the leftist and 'public' sources list the natgas drilling as a suspected culprit (no obvious agenda, right!?!).

If you think that’s bad take a look at Christchurch, NZ. They’ve had 5,188 EQs since 4 September!
http://www.christchurchquakemap.co.nz/all

Just in the past 24 hours they’ve had 19 of them.

Same observations here, and we are located a few miles east of Hot Springs. Heard the low rumble like thunder and then felt the shaking for 2-3 seconds....probably not as intense as yours but still noticeable at roughly 65 miles away as the crow flys.

Maybe there’s a sub-surface magma pocket that causes the hot springs of Hot Springs to be hot. Maybe the magma is shifting in that pocket...Isn’t there an extinct volcanic neck in AR where people can find diamonds? Perhaps the two are related somehow?

I’m not a Greenpeace-funded geologist or a hack story writer for a newspaper, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night...

Murfreesboro, near Hope. Crater of Diamonds State Park.
Quite a ways from Guy/Green Briar.

ok, these hot spots move relative to the surface, though - eg Hawaii and Yellowstone. how far is hot springs from the epicenter?

On December 16, 1811, the 400 residents of New Madrid, Missouri, were shaken out of their beds at two in the morning by a violent earthquake. Huge cracks split the ground. The waters of the Mississippi rose and fell like a great tide. Giant waves rose up and swept north, giving the impression that the river was actually flowing backwards. Boats along the river were engulfed, capsized, and theeair crews drowned.

It's one year after two New Madrid earthquakes have devastated the Mississippi Valley.
Battalions of foreign peackeepers are occupying Tennessee, at the invitation of the President.

Phil Carson, (from "Enemies Foreign And Domestic"), and three strangers are hiding in a well-stocked cave, which is a guerrilla fighter's lair. Across the region Kazakh "contract peacekeepers" are wiping out the last remaining American holdouts, who have rejected the federal government's order to abandon their homes and move to "relocation centers."

This scene is in the middle of the novel.

Plot the locations in google earth. All those tan or gray square patches on the landscape are drill platforms. Just saying, even a stopped clock is right twice a day.

Yes, there are both present here. The crater of diamonds is in Murfreesboro - Just NW of Hot Springs. The New Madrid also runs roughly along Crowley’s ridge in East AR. Ironically, on the east side of the ridge, there is a lot of saltwater creatures being uncovered - on the west side, nothing. I think this used to be an ancient coastal area with quite a bit of volcanic activity. It has been very stable for many thousands of years (with the exception of the New Madrid).

Post #7 states “...about 65 miles.”
Anything possible. Some blame fracking, yet area around NE Penn. being fracked constantly and no earthquakes that I’m aware of. Dimock,PA has had pollution complaints caused by fracking fluids entering their drinking water. Wells, etc. But even that is a matter of great conflict. Although it has stopped NY and possibly Maryland from permitting fracking wells.
Some in Arkansas advocate further study...

Alaska gets around 100 measurable quakes a day. I believe New Zealand is part of the "Ring of Fire."

Alaska is a pretty big land mass but the quakes I mentioned are happening in Christchurch which really isn’t that big of a city.

Here’s an update on Christchurch. Looks like it may become volcano city soon based upon the emails Robert Felix is receiving.

http://www.iceagenow.com/Comments_on_Christchurch_earthquake-Volcanic.htm

(excerpt)

“I would be interested in your theories in regards to these ‘aftershocks’ we are having as there has been some talk by myself and my friends and family that we feel this could be a lead up to an eruption from our ‘extinct’ Lyttelton volcano as well. We have however been led to believe that there is no possible chance Lyttelton could erupt but there is a whisper amongst some people that is this what is coming.”

“2 weeks before this latest earthquake there had been complaints across Christchurch of a strong smell of Sulphur and people not knowing where this smell was coming from, it was downplayed that is probably was broken sewer lines. After the September earthquake there was also a yellow powder type substance found around Christchurch which was put down to a certain type of tree pollen. I am unsure if this could be preceding an eminent volcanic eruption or activity but I have no expertise in this field.”

I am so sad for the New Zealanders. I have been through a couple of good shakes, and it’s really frightening. The loss of life and fortune down there is agony to see. They are on my prayer list.
