As the apostle Paul wrote, we need to pray "for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives" (1 Timothy 2:2). So I pray for President Obama while I oppose his agenda. In fact, our prayers have never been more urgently needed than right now.
A quick check of the headlines shows that President Obama faces enormous challenges around the globe. The Muslim world is in upheaval, and there's no telling if the result will be the rise of democracy -- or a descent into Iran-style theocracy.
Imagine being the president of the United States, confronting this rising chaos without any firm Reaganesque principles to guide you. That's the situation President Obama finds himself in. This man truly needs our prayers.

“For what it’s worth, I come to Free Republic for political information and conversation - not religion. I get that on my own terms, at my own church, and in the quiet of my own solitude.
I stay as far away as I can from religious conversation on this forum, because for me, an online forum is just not the place for me to discuss my most deeply held personal beliefs. That’s all.”
I totally agree and feel the same way.
Oh, man...this deserves reposting, and bumping to the top! Please read my comments all of the way to the end.
“Why bother?
Pray for Mao?
Stalin?
Adolf?
Pelosi?
it’s nuts...I pray for my family and innocents especially the wee ones who are at our mercy in need or leaders I share values with
I don’t get all this kumbaya crap. I was raised Southern Baptist from the old days. Onward Christian Soldiers...Rock of Ages, Just as I Am....you know what I mean.
This New Age Rick Warren junk sounds like Deepak Chopra with a rosary or
I will never pray for my enemies who wish to destroy my way of life and all the sacrifices of those who came before as an extension of their own neurosis and issues...like where’s daddy or why am I mixed race etc..
Not now not ever.
Do I pray for Osma Bin Laden?
Hell no..I pray for his victims to get justice...now in the physical world.
hell man...all these touchy feely mess...how on earth will we ever prevail
like everything else...too many Christians have lost their guts and find being on their knees easier than cowboying up
prayer is so good for so many things...my life’s history is a roadmap of God’s providence and grace and those here who know me can attest to that
but pray for our foes...get outta here
PS: Dick Land...wuss
PSII: there is a lot of stuff in the Old Covenant that speaks to this...it’s too easy to cherrypick the New Testament to rationalize being a doormat..not me”
BTW...Southern Baptists are changing, and Land’s “spokesmanship” might be tenuous.
Though, I know that you know that each Southern Baptist church is solely owned and run by the individual leadership of their home church.
IOW...Land’s position is questionable, at best.
One last thing...
“I will never pray for my enemies who wish to destroy my way of life...”
You should..but you don’t always have to pray for success.
You can pray for defeat. It’s being done all of the time.
My prayer is that Obama and others in positions of power and authority across the world open their hearts to God, that they may know and grow in His love.
I ask for open and receptive hearts for everyone.... Me and my family, the faithless, the faithful, the weak, the strong, the rich, the poor, everyone.
I pray for that because I believe it’s the right thing to do.
.........in the same way that I pray for a demon possessed thug trying to break into my house.........
Deliver us from Obama !
I pray that the kenyan socialist muslim marxist tool of satan president obama fails in all his efforts to destroy the United States of America and the freedom and liberty of all Americans, including you.
It’s a tough prayer, but somebody’s got to pray it.
I agree with Mike, infact God led me to this verse as the 2008 election was gearing up ( I may oppose Obama politically, but I, as God does, want him to be “saved”, and to have wisdom while in office (even though I don’t think he has shown much so far), and I DEFINITELY DO NOT want him or his family to be harmed physically in any way!
J.S. 1 Tim Ch. 2, GOD COMMANDS you and I to pray for him and it’s not really a choice (well it is but you aren’t obeying God if you don’t..).
I’m with you.
Maybe I’ll pray for him to fail at his life’s task of turning the USA into part of a global socialist dictatorsihp, but that’s as far as I’ll go.
>> This New Age Rick Warren junk
Hmmm... your rant is kinda bizarre. And this from someone who respects you and agrees with most of what you post.
Praying for your enemies and leaders is not “New Age Rick Warren junk”... it’s the commandment of Jesus Christ Himself and from the Holy Spirit-inspired writings of the apostle Paul.
I don’t always know how, and I don’t get it entirely — there are many of God’s commandments that I don’t fully understand — but I cannot deny that it is written in the Good Book in black and white.
It’s not “kumbaya crap”.
>> I was raised Southern Baptist from the old days. Onward Christian Soldiers...Rock of Ages, Just as I Am....you know what I mean.
Do Southern Baptists still study the Bible and believe that it is the infallible, inspired Word of God? They *used* to.
I’ll start praying for Obama when I see him actively working FOR Americans instead of against us.
Obama has to recognize the Evil that has made a home in him and pray to God for help and forgiveness.
Sister John Michael passes on this one........
To be perfectly honest, I don’t care how anyone else interprets scripture. My conscience is clear and I will not pray for obama.
A nun after my own heart.........
well...that’s a helluva thing for a nervous tick to make light of “bizarre”
all that matters here to me in all honesty is that folks I know and respect here for a decade agree with me...it tells me I’m on the right track
you can interpret scripture how you FEEL you need to
next calamity..and it is coming. ...when our nation’s fate is in the balance
indulgent interpretation like your’s will be tossed and we will go back to strong non ecumenical Christendom
I pray.
btw...none of us agree 100%...maybe I’m too hardcore...I have lived
no doubt it’s made me very realistic
i’m not sure of your age but if one is older like me it’s hard to deny where a relaxation of former stalwartness...yes in even in the interpretation of the Bible has led us
it’s weakened us...I’m sorry..it’s just plain as day to me
Nobody when I grew up thought about praying for Ho Chi Minh or Fidel and I sure never heard my folks talk about praying for Axis powers or even New Dealers and other Socialists or even JFK whom they didn’t like either
The word “Obama” is in my prayers every day.
>> im not sure of your age
I’m 55.
When I do pray for our leaders — like I say, I have trouble with it even though I acknowledge that I should — I pray that God aid them when they walk in His way, and thwart their efforts when they violate His will.
I do not mention any of the current administration by name in my prayers. I simply can’t bring myself to do it. Anyway, I’m not fooling God — He knows exactly what is in my heart, and how I feel towards each of them.
I pray for our enemies (inside and outside our country) thusly:
“Lord, I pray that you will remove the hatred and malice from their hearts, as that is of Satan... even as you deliver us from the harm they intend for us.”
I don’t know if that is adequate (in God’s eyes) but I’m doing my best.
Each of us must “...work out [our] own salvation with fear and trembling” (Phillipians 2:12).
God bless you and FRegards
