The most polarizing issue among kids growing up in New York in the 1950s in New York City was who was the better center fielder, Duke Snider or Willie Mays."Willie Mays' glove is where triples go to die."

Hit, Hit for power, Throw, Catch, Run.
Willie was the best of them at all five.

In the 50’s Duke was a very good ballplayer. Mays was better and Mantle was the best.
Too bad you left Brooklyn, Duke. RIP

Too bad you left Brooklyn, Duke. You kidding? Even in retirement he wasn't about to go back there...

>>>>>>You kidding? Even in retirement he wasn't about to go back there... LOL I'll ignore that remark. I grew up a few miles from Ebbets Field and my Dad was a Dodger fan. The Bums came very close to staying in Brooklyn. Which wasn't a bad place in the 50's, even through the 60's. Thanks to the strongarm tactics of Robert Moses, Walter O'Malley was stifled in his efforts to build a new stadium for the Dodgers. Next stop, California.

Live long enough, and you’re a footnote that almost nobody remembers.
But it beats the alternative.

I remember the catch well. I watched it live after school on my 12 inch Philco.

And 64 years of marriage to boot. What a guy.
RIP Duke Snider.

I am so sad.
But it does my heart good to see so many FReepers and thousands of fans across the nation love my all-time favorite Dodger too.
Duke, I mourn your passing...
