WASHINGTON—Republican officials say former House Speaker Newt Gingrich intends to take a formal step in the next two weeks toward a run for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination.

He would be the first of many potential contenders to make the move to challenge President Barack Obama.

The former Georgia congressman has been travelling to key primary and caucus states in recent months in the run-up to a campaign for the White House.

The officials say an announcement is likely in the first half of March. It is not clear what type of declaration he intends to make. Some White House hopefuls set up exploratory committees, while others simply announce their candidacy.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity, saying they were not authorized to disclose Gingrich's plans.

Why? What is your problem pray tell? If you feel so strongly as to say “gag me with a spoon” do give a substantive reason why.

Gingrich, granted was not a sterling knight in armour personally—but he is without a doubt a formidable intellect and a conservative thinker that can come out on top of any lib debate. And he has the real world track record of getting the job done.

What is your beef?

Agree with you — let’s hear what Newt has to say — he has his baggage but is, as you say, a formidable intellect and conservative thinker. And...he has been touting Allen West as a VP candidate which sounds like he, at the least, believes West has a big future in store -—

I’m in favor of letting this thing play out — let’s have those who are interested step up to the plate and let us hear them. Many have already bailed............

He’s welcome to run. I won’t vote for him in a primary, but, if he wins the nomination, I’d hold my nose and pull the lever next to his name. He isn’t perfect, but, we HAVE to get the fraud out of the WH.

Gingrich is a smart guy whose ego sometimes blinds him. We don’t need more narcissists in positions of power.

Newt’s got a lot of baggage that the Soetoro slime machine will pound him with, more importantly he’s soft on border issues. This is important because whether we acknowledge it or not, the border is another front in the war on terror and the struggle to save our economy.

While there are some that would say “don’t run” my personal feeling is that he would bring alot to any debate and what we need is debate amongst the candidates. Have good intelligent conversation, give us an outline of what your goals and plans are for jobs, taxes, military, foreign policy, etc and then I wish we would all vote in the primary ON THE SAME DAY! That way, whoever comes out on top overall is selected...I just hate it how NH, IA, FL all get in their picks and knock out early some people and we get stuck with a media pick like Juan McShame!

He'll get the same percentage of votes whether he runs or doesn't run.

I don't mind if he runs. Odds are overwhelming he will say something really foolish and self-destruct before he gets to the nom anyway.

1. The GOP must not nominate older, calorically challenged candidates. This applies equally to poor candidates as well as otherwise good candidates. In the era of people making voting decisions on superficial info, the superficiality of looks and age make a significant difference.

2. Newt G chose to disqualify himself, anyway. When he sat on the global warming casting couch with Nancy Pelosi, he CHOSE to forfeit any chance of winning in the primaries. (Newt, if you can't make better decisions than this, you simply do not belong in higher office, and that is that!)

If Gingrich gets the R nomination, my whole entire family which is tired of the Republican Party pushing RINOs and CINOs will simply vote “write-in” or for the Libertarian, Constitution Party or Independent candidates of choice.

Your nose is safe. At least from Newt Gingrich.

There must be a money angle to this. He doesn’t have a chance, but maybe he can gain a stage for future books and Analyst jobs. That’s the only reason I can think of for him running.

Aside from his personal issues, he lost me when he sat down on the couch with nancy pelosi to advance global warming issues. If he can fall for this conspiracy hook, line and sinker, we don’t need him running the country.
