Congressman who donned tiger costume files for re-election
By Daniel Strauss - 02/25/11 07:11 PM ET
Despite recent news reports of bizarre behavior and calls for his resignation, Rep. David Wu (D-Ore.) has filed for reelection.
Wu filed a statement of organization with the Federal Election Commission on Wednesday to be able to run for his seat in 2012.
Two major Oregon newspapers and Oregon Republicans have been calling for Wu's resignation after revelations, originally reported by The Oregonian, that Wu had been exhibiting strange behavior, including dressing in a tiger costume and sending emails to his staff in the voice of one of his daughters.
As a result, some of Wu's staff have quit and others have encouraged him to be seek professional help.
Wu went on ABC's Good Morning America on Tuesday and admitted that he is receiving counseling and taking medication. He has called his behavior "unprofessional and inappropriate."
Wu has served as a member of Congress representing Oregon's first district for seven terms. Given the reliably Democratic voting record of the district, an eighth term for Wu was extremely likely, at least before the news of his odd behavior broke.
Since then, Wu's reelection appears to be less than a sure thing and his presumptive challenger, Republican and sports management consultant Rob Cornilles, has repeatedly called attention to Wus behavior.
Cornilles challenged Wu's last reelection but lost by 13 points. This time, Oregon Republicans are more optimistic. Wu, however, apparently thinks he can defend his seat.
Read Wu's statement of organization here.
This year is the Year of the Rabbit. Let’s see Wu campaign in that costume.
This is weird because he is in a lib district but is supposedly fairly moderate. It seems like the news media is trying just a bit too hard. The guy put on a Tiger suit. I am not sure that makes him crazy. I think they want to put a harder core lib in his seat.
Is Wu nuts?
Not as much as those who will vote for him.
You are talking about Oregon, remember.
When exactly was it, Republicans “learned” that acquiescing to political pressure, gains anyone even one tiny bit of respect? 1994, and Newt Gingrich?
(how’d that work out?.........)
The guy is a fruitcake, but every single Republican would do well, to LEARN FROM HIM.
Never quit. Ever.
I am not sure what is more insane. A politician putting on a tiger costume & sending it around or being described as crazy for having done so. This is a sort of conundrum that only gets worse the more one addresses it because it was sort of crazy what he did.
The C’Critter needs to wear a ‘Rat costume on the House floor.
Wu...who?
Woo-hoo. :)
So, Wu's on first?
What a Wuzer.
He doesn’t seem to be any more incompetent or eccentric than anyone else in the beltway.
Wu is Transspecies. Part Man part Tiger. To draw attention to this is to attack a member of a very small minority, who may or may not have been born that way, depending on what the argument says. It would be wrong to point out that he’s crazy. In fact, we should put new bathrooms everywhere for Transspecies. Wu may not be authentically Transspecies, and may just be pretending to be Transspecies, because he might be planning on hunting down animals and tearing them apart with his teeth and eating them. There are no laws against tigers doing that. Wu plans to argue that it was the tiger part of him that ripped apart the animals with their teeth, and he should be found not guilty because no laws have been written banning tigers from such conduct.
He’s a Democrat for Petes sake!
Hey, if we had a Secretary of State with a tattoo of a tiger on his butt...
The leftist media is trying to paint those who are calling for his resignation as evil-meanies claiming that they are calling for his resignation based upon the guy wearing a tiger costume at his kid’s party.
But if you read the stories in detail, you find that even his campaign staffers were complaining about his nutcase behavior and that recently half a dozen or so resigned...because of his nutcase behavior.
All you need to do to ask whether what you are reading/hearing is biased is:
“What would the stories be if it were George W. Bush or Sarah Palin?”
There’s more to this guy’s behavior than just the tiger costume. He’s been acting like a nutcase for quite a while.
