Former Utah Sen. Bob Bennett urged Republicans to nominate a presidential candidate with a "national view," and not focus on the ideological purity found in the early caucuses and primaries.
"If you're going to nominate a national candidate, don't make the mistake of assuming that those who attend the early caucuses and early primaries speak for the nation as a whole," he said, speaking to Greta Van Susteren on Fox News on Friday. Bennett referred to 2010 midterm Senate races as a "cautionary tale" to Republicans whose candidates fail to attract moderate voters, in particular Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski's write-in reelection win over tea party favorite Joe Miller. He said the tea party candidates cost the Republicans a majority in the Senate.
"If you're going to nominate a national candidate you better have a national view, and we've always done that. The Republican nominee has almost always been closer to the center than the center of gravity of the Republican party," Bennett said.

Um. Bob. Do you really think the idea that government in general, and the federal government in particular, takes too much money and power from the people...do you think that idea doesn’t have traction nationally? Do you really think an attractive, intelligent presidential candidate running with that idea couldn’t do quite well in 2012?
I’m sorry this sounds petty; but, you must use proper punctuation and spelling for me to take you seriously. Check your preview before posting. The smartest people choose Palin.
If he's so damn smart about what sort of Republican it takes to be a successful Presidential candidate, how come he never ran?
I couldn’t watch the whole interview.
What a pompous as*.
Tell me, does the inside of a RINOS A$$hole smell as bad as one might think? You might want to take your head out of it.
I will voter for the democrat if I have a choice between a RINO and a Democrat. Ha Ha. I have voted for my last RINO, Mc SH1tStain.
Does this old fool think anyone cares what he may sputter about anything? Really! Go to a nursing home and drool on your self, bennett, you RINO loser.
If the Republicans run a RINO for President in ‘12 I will activity support Obama. Might as well go down the crapper in a quick way, hit bottom sooner.
He attacked us, it is legitimate to retaliate. If he wants peace, let him cease making war.
He just lost the Indy 500, so he offers us driving tips.
IGNORE BENNETT ~ he’s a tired old man and it won’t be long.
I believe Bennett has given enough service to be recognized as a serious individual, and treated as one. I consider that respecting someone requires responding to them appropriately. He is not an infant.
Bennett crashed and burned years ago. He WAS retired. He should stay that way.
It doesn't sound petty, but it does make you sound like a self-righteous, sophomoric twit who is not to be taken seriously.
A better writer than you are would change that silly semicolon to a comma, and then drop the unnecessary comma after, “but”.
"Splinter in neighbor's eye, mote in your eye" sort of thing. Grow up, friend. We have bigger things to discuss here.

The GOP did virtually nothing to help the campaigns of Sharon Angle in Nevada, Joe Miller in Alaska, Christine McDonnell in Delaware, etc.
The Republican voters elected these TEA Party individuals during the primary process, and then the RINO’s in charge of the GOP pouted because these candidates were “too conservative.”
The RINO establishment withheld support and financial aid to these candidates, and then complained when these candidates lost to the democrats. The RINO establishment needs to go.
Huckster will be in there screwing it up again. I FEAR HE WILL RUN INTERFERENCE FOR JEB BUSH.

Let me get this straight.
We are not to let the party elite decide the nominee for the election, since they may not represent what the people are thinking...meaning don’t let the tea party nominate the candidate.
Just what has been happening all these years already when none of us got to vote for a nominee for years because they were pre-selected by the party elite? That’s how we got McCain. That’s how we got the tea party! You were not listening!
The tea party is what the public wants, Bob. That is why you were not reelected.
