The NoteSlate tablet thats been designed to replace paper as a note-taking device now has a proper webpage that describes the tablet in complete detail. Its specs, how it works and more. The tablet packs a 13″ (760 x 1080) display that is similar to E-ink. It can be used for writing, drawing, and even as an eBook reader. It also has a mini USB port, SD card reader, a 3.5mm audio jack WiFi and will run on a Linux-based operating system. Judging from the photos and details provided on the site, this looks like it could be an artists dream sketchbook. No more having to deal with the hassles of paper, smudged drawings (although an accident involving water would probably be more drastic with this tablet) or even pencil sharpening. The NoteSlate is expected to ship in June for $99. Head here to check out the official NoteSlate website.

I’m an artist. I don’t get it. A pencil and paper can be had for a lot less than $99.

It may be cheaper, per use, to use the NoteSlate. You can only use a piece of paper once, but you can use the NoteSlate over and over.
How useful it will prove to be is something to be watched.

I'm with you. I just don't get it. And not only with this device, but with a lot of this new technology. It' like WOOSH, right over my head. Thank God we're not alone:

I’m FReeping right now on a Pandigital Novel eBook. It looks very similar to that device. Its in color, has a 9” screen, SD card slot, wi-fi, USB, works with a stylus, and is rechargeable. The battery will run for about 6 hours and comes with an AC charger adapter, $199....

I'm an engineer, and I often make sketches of things - on paper. But I have a problem - what to do with all that paper? Ideally I need to scan it and attach to the project, so that later on I can find my notes. I do that now, but it takes time, and some notes may be hard to find among other notes.
Such a tablet would be handy if it can store notes in files; then I simply save those files; nothing will be ever lost. The $99 cost is very small compared to the cost of an engineering notebook, pens, and a scanner, and scanning software, and time.
But it remains to be seen if this tablet is adequate for my purpose. The resolution of the screen and the quality of the digitizer must be pretty good for it to replace pen and paper.

As someone that spends time with a pencil and paper, and a geek, I would buy it for the linux appliance part, but the tactile sensations of pencil and paper can't be reproduced by it.
Besides, smudging with a tortillion is part of what makes pencil drawing great.

My sister just gave one of those to my mom, (she upgraded to a Samsung Galaxy)and asked me to wipe it for her. I found a firmware upgrade for an android phone that’s really cool. I can even watch youtube flash vids on it now.

This could actually be useful walking around in class, helping individual students.

It sounds neat but an “I Pad rival”? Can it play angry birds?
