"Nessun Dorma" is the big money aria from "Turandot". It comes as a surprise in the opera, and it's one of the best things Puccini ever wrote.

I was lookin’ for a nice round table for the kitchen area.

Don’t think I could afford this one without a 2nd mortgage...

Puccini liked to telegraph his punches by have a big buildup in the orchestra preceding his Big Money Aria for a given opera. ("La Boheme" was an exception because there were so many Big Money Arias in the show.)

In "Tosca" and "Gianni Schicchi" he uses the big buildup. In "Turandot" he avoids the buildup, and as a result, the listener doesn't know it's the Big Money Aria until he's several lines into it. It comes as a shock, and it's the technique of a mature master who no longer needs to telegraph his intent.

“Sixteen Tons,” written by Merle Travis and recorded by Tennessee Ernie Ford, became one of America’s most popular songs in the mid-1950s. People seemed to identify with this coal miner’s lament about feeling trapped and unable to change his situation no matter how hard he worked. Coal miners often lived in company-owned houses and were paid in “scrip”—coupons valid only at the company-owned store. Even if summoned to heaven, the miner said, he couldn’t go because he owed his soul to the company store.

Here's the original version by Merle Travis.

Moody Blues, another great group; did you ever see their live reunion concert from Red Rock, Colorado, on PBS, about 1991?
