Libya orders mass cash handouts in attempt to quell unrest

State television says Muammar Gadhafi's beleaguered regime to increases food subsidies, allowances as well as a sweeping cash grants.

Libya's government, clinging to power after a popular revolt, has ordered massive cash handouts include wage increases, food subsidies and allowances, state television reported on Friday.

It said each family will receive 500 Libyan dinars ($400) to help cover increased food costs, and that wages for some categories of public sector workers would increase by 150 percent, the television station said.

Too late. If you do it before the riots, like in Saudi, it can defuse thing. Once the rioting starts this just looks like weakness. Qaddafi should just used the money to hire mercenaries and shoot up the rioters. Or better yet just by a luxury plane ticket out of town.

Of course when two of your enemies are fighting why get in the way. I hope he wastes all his money and they both kill each other off. Best possible result from our standpoint.

Right, Cash for Seniors.

Plus there was $20 or $25 per week added to unemployment checks by the stimulus plan.

Plus that wonderful "Making Work Pay" tax credit that boosted paychecks by $17 or so a week. Or was it $22 a week. I don't remember. I do remember that the "bonus" for the unemployed was higher than for the "making work pay" credit, and it started sooner.
