O's marriage move: All about the votes
NY Post ^ | February 24, 2011 | Michael A. Walsh

And so another signature ini tiative of the Clinton admin istration goes down in flames at the hands of the Obama administration.

First it was the "Don't ask, don't tell" policy on gays in the military. Now, it's the Defense of Marriage Act -- passed overwhelmingly by both houses of Congress and signed into law in 1996 -- which gave, in its Section 3, federal recognition to the exclusive, traditional nature of one-man, one-woman wedlock and told the states they didn't have to recognize other states' same-sex marriages.

In a letter to Speaker John Boehner on Wednesday, Attorney General Eric Holder wrote: "After careful consideration, including review of a recommendation from me, the president of the United States has made the determination that Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act . . . as applied to same-sex couples who are legally married under state law, violates the equal protection component of the Fifth Amendment . . . and is therefore unconstitutional."

If you had any doubts that Campaign 2012 wasn't already underway, you can lay them to rest.

Forget last month's media-fueled blather about an imaginary "pivot to the center." Barack Obama is running, hard, as a flat-out progressive, for a second term as president of the United States, and he needs to shore up his hard-left base.

As is now evident, Obama's previous "opposition" to gay marriage during his Senate run in 2004 and his presidential run was a calculated ruse to defuse social-conservative opposition -- for even then, he was quietly signaling that this day would come when the political moment was right. As he wrote in "The Audacity of Hope," he was "open to the possibility that my unwillingness to support gay marriage is misguided," and that he had been "infected with society's prejudices."

Yeah, and it was about the votes in 2008 when he was defending traditional marriage.

He’s going to risk pissing off a large swath of the population to pull in somewhere between 2% to 5% of the population?

How does THAT make any sense?

What votes? How many gays are there out there?

2%?

The bottom line is that Obama has been remiss in his duties, and that while the nation has serious problems he is farting around with this nonsense.

It is retaliation for the threat to defund Obamacare.

I don't think it about votes:

"Keep the pressure on, with different tactics and actions, and utilize all events of the period for your purpose."
"The major premise for tactics is the development of operations that will maintain a constant pressure upon the opposition. It is this unceasing pressure that results in the reactions from the opposition that are essential for the success of the campaign.

By the time Obama finishes messing his nest, he might find it more comfortable to go retire in his native Kenya.

He is either purposely being negligent in hope of doing as much damage as possible to American interests....or else he should audition for a role as “Hamlet” with some Shakespearian company.

You have to realize that virtually all Liberals will champion him for it and that's at least 20% right there. This is nothing more than a political move, though. Obama's trying to start a Social Issues debate to distract from his failures in the Economy and his Clueless Foreign policy. We have to tread carefully here. He's trying to rally his troops, just like Wisconsin. Alinsky is at work here. He's trying to divide the Tea-Party Social Conservatives and Libertarians. A very shrewd move.

I know his game is “how can I fool ‘em today?” but how many does he actually fool anymore?

I think the “transparency” we were promised has finally taken hold in the WH.

I disagree on you idea of what is the bottom line.

The bottom line is that Obama has taken charge of the Government and in realiy done away with laws and who makes them.

He picks and chooses what laws are enforced,he uses agencies to make regulations when he cannot get his laws passed,he has usurped the authority of the three branch’
s of government, and so far those other two branch’s have allowed him to do it.

The bottom line is that the Kenyan has become the Government

About matches the Jews. And they are both HEAVY Dem contributors.

Watch the “strongly support” number on Rasmussen in the days ahead. I figure it will rise with the DoMA move.

I have almost begun to believe that this has nothing at all to do with votes. It has nothing to do with anybody’s rights.

What am beginning to come to the conclusion to is the destruction of the institution of marriage is desirable to the left because it is destructive to the fabric of Western society.

As other posters noted, why go through this for 2 to 5% of the vote? I understand that in close elections that can be a large amount, but when you think about it, how much is this really going to gain them? If I had to make a guess, I’d say that 95% of that 2 to 5% is already voting a liberal ticket anyway.

Liberals want to make homosexuality a civil rights issue, and it is nothing of the sort. Nobody’s rights are being trampled, nobody is going into their bedroom and yanking them out from under the covers in the middle of acts of sodomy and throwing them in jail.

The opposition to the homosexual agenda apart from the obvious religious that many folks have, is the fact that marriage has a special status in society that grants certain privileges and advantages to a man and woman in order to help them raise their offspring properly.

I don’t have children, but I fully support the advantages (however slim they seem to be these days) that government grants married couples. As I said, I don’t have children, but that doesn’t mean I don’t want any of my tax money supporting the construction and operation of schools. (Of course, I don’t support the current public school model/funding process as it currently stands, but I digress…)

I almost get the feeling that liberal politicians like Obama push this for the simple gleeful enjoyment of the destructive aspects of it.

I agree with that sentiment… I do think Scanian was correct in his first thought. What a terrible conclusion to come to, but reality compels us to it.
