FAIRBANKS, Alaska
At about 5:00 I found out that the racers were stopping in Golovin due to life-threatening conditions. Apparently race veteran and one of team members who was first to Nome, Marc McKenna, called race marshal Chris Graeber and told her that they were stopping in Golovin because the trail was impassible, they were all wet, and "Someone's going to die out here," (this is a... fourth-hand quote, but I'd imagine that's the gist of it).
According to GPS and a since-deleted Facebook post by an administrator of the Iron Dog page, three teams have decided to go on despite race officials' warnings. The GPS tracker shows Team 11 Palin/Quam, Team 7 Davis/Davis and Team 17 West/George have moved on.
At a point when all their GPS units had pinged at the same time, all three teams appeared to be moving about 12 MPH very close to each other.
Race fans on both the Iron Dog and KTUU Facebook pages are torn. Many are applauding the decision by race officials (I'm still not sure what "decision" was made, or if it was just racers themselves) to heed to safety. Others are basically saying "This is the Iron Dog, it's expected, man up or get out."
I'm torn. I'm obviously not out on the trail (or what's left of it). I am no pro distance snowmachine racer, but I'd take the word of a seasoned veteran.

Conditions are life threatening and trails are almost impassable
Our good friend Todd Palin?
If weather has stopped the races, why not call a time out then restart from same positions once possible.
*they are all making their way there to Unalakleet as safely and quickly as possible, to organize a restart, to get them back to racing, and on the clock
*No one is racing right now. No matter where they are the race restarts when the Race officials say go not when racers say go. And the restart is the same as Nome times The race is ON HOLD

I hear Palin’s hairdresser is going to be on a new Bravo show. Maybe we can have ‘live threads’ for it like we did with Bristol’s DWTSs and the Sarah-Kate show.
Maybe McKenna was having problems and this was a way for he and his partner to keep the lead by convincing the officials to yellow-flag the race.
If his comment about being wet was about himself or his partner, they would be in danger from hypothermia.
Will be interesting to see how this plays out.
So is the trail all wet because of...... global warming?

at least, gotta give pissant credit for choosing an apropos ID name -
Wow, a thread about real men risking their lives in a grueling and dangerous race, and the widdle pissant wants to talk about about freakin’ hairdressers?
Gov. Palin was right when she said, “Girly men don’t ride the Iron Dog.” Apparently they would rather talk about hairdressers than about the Iron Dog too, even on a thread about the Iron Dog.

“Extraordinary conditions are wreaking havoc on the race. What should normally be a 90 minute drive from Nome to Golovin, the Pro Teams have been slogging for four hours. Snow depth in the Golovin to Elim areas is easily more than seven feet add that to Arctic coastal winds and storm surge, the creeks and rivers are filling with overflow.”
Ping the fans!
They aren’t allowed to use snowmobiles that double as hovercraft, are they? :-)
I thought I had detected a good dose of sarcasm in that statement....is my meter off?
Elim was the first Oasis the children of Israel visited after they came out of Egypt (Ex 16) Hard to imagine snow there!

Trolling again. You better knock it off. This is not the way to convince people of your points. Its just a way to convince people that you are more of a pain than ever. Though, the point is not lost, I have been following the Iron Dog myself and it is quite interesting. As Sarah Palin said, "This race is not for girly men." except that the current race managers have seemed to have forgotten this because of the higher profile this race has taken, much to the irritation of the old hands.
Nevertheless, everyone is playing by the rules and looking out for each other in the fashion that they do and this is compelling, news and relevant to the character of the man who would be the first "Dude." and also to the Lady who has the guts to let him do his thing, regardless. It is not easy seeing any loved one put themselves in mortal danger. How many politicos would not only allow but support their spouse doing something like this?
It speaks volumes about their relationship. Todd is not anyone's "kept" man, he is a hard charging common guy with good character, a quick wit and uncommon drive and bravery. This is an important thing to know. Especially when you see what not worrying about character has done to our country in the guise of the current occupant of the White House.
So, trashing this thread is way off base. And par for the course if you are Pissant.
It is truly getting sickening seeing all these sycophantic Palin worship threads popping up every hour. Last I checked, this is a Conservative site for ALL Conservatives, not just Palin worshipers. (Her husband included)
It would also be high time to show some mutual respect for other opinions that do not agree with the Palin Club agenda. (Just sayin’)
Please note that this is not a 'sycophantic Palin worship thread'. You and P should respect that.
Oh contrare, I could and did note it but then rejected the point as it was lame. You didn't read my post. Always a good idea. Read first then yap. You are sick of things that other folks like to read. I am sure that the Anti-Mac folks hate all of the posts that have hit this week on that topic. But, it is news and relevant to freepers. Your point is that this information should not be posted at all. This is a lame point. Pissant's opinion if he just disagreed would be fine. But, frankly, instead, he behaves as a Troll. Deliberately being insulting and posting quotes out of context and quoting lefty distorted sites as if they are hard news. Any other guy that did this would be gone, but I have defended him on more than one occasion, because of the work he had done in the past, but frankly it has gotten thin.
Now read my actual post and deal with that.. don't go calling me anyone's worshiper. This is just crap too. And if you think it is so easy to do the IronDog. Enter. I will watch your progress just the same, now that I have gotten interested in it. But, I doubt you have the drive or the guts to do this, just the same as almost every other person in this world. It takes something exceptional to do this sort of thing, and it is interesting that this person is Sarah Palin's husband. If you can't catch that, it is your problem, not mine.
To 10 - Can it. I’d hardly call riding a snowmobile a noteworthy feat, no matter the distance. Why aren’t you up there traversing Alaska, Painter? You’re ‘Iron Dog’ material, aren’t you?
