Sketching out a worst-case scenario of San Jose's budget meltdown, city officials warned this week that they could lay off as many as 349 police officers and 145 firefighters, slashing close to a quarter of the city's public safety employees.
The city is also looking at millions of dollars in other cuts, including shutting off neighborhood
streetlights for much of the night and eliminating some gang-prevention programs.
There has never been a major layoff of police officers in the city's modern history. But last year San Jose laid off 49 firefighters, and this is the second year in a row the Police Department has faced layoffs.

When there’s no money, there is no money.
Give em IOUs. That will work.
This sounds like what the mafia does when you don’t pay them protection money.
“When theres no money, there is no money.”
No the money has been siphoned for outrageous compensation, particularly retirement compensation (pensions and health care). San Jose like many government units is caught in a vice between demands of retirees and the needs of taxpayers. Since the retiree demands take precedence over everything else, taxpayer needs will just be ignored.
That’s as good as cash.
No doubt the bloated salaries and benefits of the administrators represented by the unions will be preserved — at least for now — by the savings generated from layoffs of highly publicly sensitive workers such as police and fire.
In a sane world, the police and fire departments would be warning that the “officials” will have to be fired.
Just a wild guess - is San Jose a “sanctuary city”?
Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Just do it already. And as the economy continues to crash and burn. Just remember, you looting parasites in government finally did it. You killed the host.
And like all parasites, they will do their most damage at the end of the Hosts existence.
But they can’t get rid of all those Personal Assistants to the Sub-Director of the Assistant Superintendent to the Secretary of the Deputy to the Commissioner of Dog Walking. They’re waaaaay too important.
That's what state and local governments did to fund the golden bebefits packages that were "collectively bargained" for over the last 30+ years. See how well that worked?
Just a wild guess - is San Jose a sanctuary city?

Technically, No.
Realistically, if ICE they made a sweep thru east san jose, half the populace would be deported.. and back in a week.
Poor Chuck Reed. my old councilman and Dad of ‘Warthog Gal’ of Iraqi fame.
In a cesspool that the south bay political scene has become, he is one of the more sane.. Cut Chuck Cut. Show Moonbeam how it is done.

They never lay off any of the anonymous “city officials”. It’s always a threat to lay off Police and Fire personnel. I suppose that is so as to hold the taxpaying citizenry hostage to their demands.
Realization that the public coffers are dry has gone viral.
