Ind. GOP leader: No compromise with absent Dems
By Deanna Martin, Associated Press – 1 hr 15 mins ago

INDIANAPOLIS – A political stalemate in Indiana showed no signs of ending anytime soon as House Democrats met privately Wednesday in an out-of-state hotel and Republicans refused to negotiate away their legislative agenda to lure them back.

While the tactic mimicked one used a week earlier by Senate Democrats in Wisconsin who fled to delay a vote on an anti-union bill, the Indiana Democrats said their protest was not about one GOP-backed proposal but a slate of them. In both states, Democrats don't have the votes to defeat the proposals, but by not showing up they can prevent the required quorum necessary to call the measures for a vote.

"We want to see a little more cooperation on everything," Patrick Bauer, the House Democratic leader, told reporters by phone from a hotel in Urbana, Ill. "I know they don't think it's necessary, but thank God the Constitution said you have a way of fighting tyranny."

Although Bauer declines to list all the sticking points, the vote that sparked Tuesday's walkout involved Indiana's "right-to-work" legislation that prohibits union membership from being a condition of employment. The walkout effectively killed that measure, but the Democrats were pushing to end other aspects of Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels' agenda, including aggressive education changes such as vouchers, the expansion of charter schools and restrictions on teacher collective bargaining.

House Speaker Brian Bosma said he talked to Bauer by phone Wednesday morning to tell him, "he needed to get back here."

"The negotiation takes place on the floor of the House," Bosma said. "This isn't the old back room deals that Rep. Bauer's used to cutting."

The GOP already punted on RTW. Why not give the Democrats everything else they asked for? You Bosma, are not fit to be the Speaker!

Unbelievable.... Just run away like a bunch of grade school kids.

Elections have consequences.

But not if you’re a DemoRAT.

Not if you’re Mitch Daniels who is willing to cave so that the GOP is hogtied in moving forward with its agenda.

Haven’t they already caved in on the bill to make Indiana a right to work state?

Only the worthless pansy Daniels. My understanding is, the legislature still wants to pursue RTW. Is that not correct?

Yup. Supposedly as NR said, so Mitch can save the rest of his agenda. The Democrats have smelled blood and they’re digging in.

No they pulled it off the agenda. But the Democratic terrorists have now made it clear the price for their return is the GOP kill its agenda for the rest of the year.

There are 11 items on the agenda that the dems left Indiana over. I think the Gov of Indiana conceded one of them (right to work) to feel them out. They (dems) are going to hold out for them all. I know a lot of FRers are mad about the cave in , but I am not interpreting this as a cave in yet. I think it is a political tactic to lure them back for the other ten items. If the dems do not come back then I think that the GOP did not cave on this.

(Rhetorically): Why is it OK (seemingly to the lame stream "media") for Demos to effectively shut down governments, but not Repubs? Where is the "media" on this question?

Why aren't they asked why it seems that they are on the side of Demos who shut down governments by refusing to participate in the legislative process, but Repubs are scum of the earth and only hurting the needy and children when they do it (you know: "gridlock" is ALWAYS Repubs fault)?

The Democrats are going to sit it out. They really have nothing to lose now.

Giving up ground is a proven winning strategy when dealing with terrorists. Did Squishy Mitch study at the Obama School of Diplomacy?

The Democrats are NEVER going to be blamed by the MSM for a government shutdown.

House Republicans in Washington are so terrified of the GS meme that they will do anything to avert the blame for shutting down the federal government.

Interesting ~ the Democrats are currently saying they're willing to sit out the current session even if what happens is there are no appropriations for the state payroll, or for state supplemental payments to local school districts.

Look, I don't think they are willing to hold out that much, but if they are they have family members, friends, neighbors they put at serious risk of violence from unbalanced unpaid state employees. One does hope they've taken appropriate action to get the innocent bystanders out of the way.

They don’t care... the suffering of government workers doesn’t move them. To defeat conservatives, you have to be willing to play hardball. I gotta admire their Godfather strategy. In a similar situation, Republicans would rather roll over and sing “kumbaya” and hold hands. The GOP is just too civilized for this world.

They have everything to lose. This cannot play out for them well. Even moderates and nominal democrats understand that adults do not do the "I am taking my ball and going home" routine.
